HAL.dll went missing

I think a recent Windows security update ate a HAL.dll . The specific error that shows when trying to fix a disk error using Hiren's is " Root>\System32\HAL.dll is missing. Please reinstall." Anyone know how this can be accomplished? The W7 disk isn't recognized unless I'm in safe mode when I load it and that means it can't do the restore.

Samat;
25% complete. I tried running scndsk and couldn't get it to work because I was in safe mode. during normal start it won't run because it can't access the system. The w7 disk will boot in safe mode but only brings the bios screen up in normal boot. No luck with Hiren's either to fix/restore

You need to use chkdsk /f in Windows Vista and later, there is no scandisk anymore. Other option is to boot from from the installation media to do a system restore.

There isn't a systray either but I still call it that. I've tried all of that and unless I'm in safe mode I can't get the machine to boot past the error screen that says the chkdsk can't access the media, and the W7 dvd won't play; it just boots to the bios screen unless, again, I'm in safe mode

Ok, so you tried booting directly from the dvd? Do you have access to another computer so you could check if your hdd and windows dvd work properly (and to maybe copy the windows dvd to usb stick for installation)?

I stuck the W7 dvd into my W8 machine and it booted ok. the W7 dvd boots in the W7 machine, as long as I'm in safe mode. Tried Hiren's ultimate boot disk w/ a light version of XP and tried a Yumi with XP , Linux, and Ubuntu (all light versions) from a USB. Again just the Bios screen unless I'm in safe mode. Unless anyone can think of another way in, I'll pull the drive out, hook it up to my W8 machine as an external drive, then see if I can boot it. Or at least copy all the files and programs. If I can only do the latter then I'll scrag the disk, reformat and re-install W7

Might be the best option, you also get the chance to check if there is something wrong with the drive itself which might be causing these problems.

This particular Seagate version has some known firmware issues that the manufacturers didn't catch and led to the cancellation of that particular line. Makes me wonder if this problem might be related. Thanks for all the help. Merry Christmas
