so i took my friends laptop apart to try to figure out what was wrong with it.

i am caught between it being the mobo or being the cpu.
i plug it in, i feel the hdd, the hd is spinning so i know its getting power, the cpu is warm, so i know power is going to it, the mobo leds are on and the fan is spinning. however the screen doesnt turn on and there are no post beeps. i tried an external monitor and got nothing. at first i assumed it was the gpu, which turns out to be integrated into the cpu. so before i realized this i figured i coul djust replace the mobo. but since its built into the cpu and not the mobo, i am not sure anymore. i have no spare parts to test with. so far im thinking to tell him to buy both and send back what he doesnt need.

Normally that is just a sign that one of the balls on the BGA solder on the video card has cracked or or has been dislocated from the chip. So there really isn't to much you can do as a permanent fix, if you look back at some of the HP series laptops back from like 09 I believe they all shipped with this really defective led free solder which cracked and caused problems such as the ones you are experiencing. It really only was a matter of time for those HP models but I believe that ASUS that you are trying to fix may also fall into that category. If it still is under warranty I would send it in for a replacement, or I would try to order a new board for it online. But since it is an i3 and most likely whatever caused it will cause it to...

i completely disassembled it multiple times aside for the cpu, i left it in, i did take the heat sink off to feel if it was hot. the screen wasnt working to begin with. everything is plugged in. there was never any ram in it. but im pretty sure without ram it would still beep. i unplugged and replugged what looked like the monitor power cable, i traced it.but again even an external monitor didnt read. i also managed to charge my phone on the usb port. oh yeah, and it doesnt read that the battery is in, it only turns on with the a/c adapter.

a laptop will not do anything without ram that will be why it doesnt beep or why the screen doesnt display anything

i did put ram in it. it just started without ram. a laptop should still make post beeps without ram, because at the end of the day it is still a motherboard and cpu. it should do the beeps that say there is no ram. anyways, everything i posted above was done with everything, even a hdd.

the gpu is integrated into the cpu, not onto the mobo, thats why i am no so sure what to do. if i am to assume its the cpu it makes sense, since there are no beeps, and no screen display, the hdd gets power, the fans spin, and the leds turn on. ut it still might also be the motherboard.

ok, so i found a post online where sum1 says to basically take everything out, except the cpu, fan, and ram, and to while it is unplugged, hold the power button down for 60 seconds, it worked. it got to the screen, and now i know the mainboard is what is bad. unfortunately hes got a big ass crack in his screen i never saw b4, so im suggesting he take the good parts out n just sell them. thx for your time guys.
