1gb ddr 400 not working in single slot of intel d 865 gsa

I have had a PC with intel d 865 GSA and 2x256 ddr 400 . recently i planned to upgrade the memory . but system is not working with single 1gb ddr 400 as well as one 1gb ddr 400 + one 256 ddr 400 . I have tried both the slots A and B in different combination but of no use please help me to solve the problem.

Quite a few motherboards, especially from OEM systems are picky when it comes to RAM. I'd just try the two 1 GB sticks and leave out the 256 one. Some also have restrictions when you can't mix double and single sided RAM.
