Hello:

I have recently installed a R9 290X lightning from MSI, I havent overclock it yet but here is the thing.
I have played Far Cry 4 for nearly 3 hours at a very stable 60 FPS, temps will no go higher than 61 C, and I can hear a little bit of coil whine all this is good.

But when I play Darksiders 2 a 3 year old game I can feel a lot more coil whine and like after 4 min playing computer turns off it self, I dont understand! according to afterburner the card is being used like by 20% or so and yes I have Vsync on at 60 FPS so i dont understand this.

Any help please?

No I just installed, its pretty weird It happened to me before but with all games when my PSU was not powerful enough to handle the system but i think this is not the case now.

My CPU temps are just fine, its an i5 3570K and temps never pass 50C.
What you said about the PSU overload makes sense to me but I dont know what part could be doing, and any way its a 850W thermaltake PSU its supposed to be overkilling for my system, maybe its starting to fail? I have like 1.6 years using it.

I just find out something weird, I can put the most demanding games and max them out without any issues for example Far Cry 4 max out i can get between 55-70 fps using 100% of the video card and probably the CPU too and the computer is fine, but when I am using games that can throw me hundreds of FPS with V-Sync Off like call of dutys and darksiders the coil while is very noticeable and the computer turns off in seconds.

I have measured how many watts is consuming and is much more when playing far cry, like 450W and for the others like darksiders like 380W with V sync off.
What does high FPS have to do with coil whine and PC turning off :/ ??

The same issue happened with me and my computer, could play Arma 3 on ultra np. but as soon as i stepped into colin macrae 2003, my computer would turn off. i had no idea why (still dont). but the way that i fixed it is that i changed the pci-e slot of my graphics card. if you try it and it does not fix your problem, i am sorry.
