GTX 970 VS Radeon 7990

Solution
The 7990 is undoubtedly better, but look at it this way, for the price of a 7990, you can use a pair of 970s in SLI and still save a lot of money. The SLI will bend the 7990 on its knees

Depends on the game, but normally the HD 7990 performs a bit better (http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/1074?vs=1355). The 7990 also uses MUCH more power to get the job done & is pretty old now (not sure if its even stil being produced?). I'd probably take a 970 with the option of putting a second on in SLI later.

I don't trust Raedon much, so in terms of reliability, go with the GTX, but in terms of playableness? I'd actually reccomend a not much more expensive and better card, the MSI GeForce GTX 980 Twin Frozr, It's mine and it's AMAZING.

If its from your friend you could surely just go use it a bit in his PC - that'd tell you if microstutter was present - I know there were microstutter issues with xfire 7xxx but I'm not sure about the 7990. Also, if buying second hand remember you will not have a warranty so you might be having to buy another GPU in the not too distant future!

EDIT: Also, what res do you play in? at 1080p, the difference between a 970 and 7990 on a 60hz screen with vsync will be 60fps and 60fps - both are capable of maxing out new games.

I was expecting this topic to come up.
Well, the answer to your question is in some games and particularly some scenes, it will and that is not because it is a bad card, but because AMD is, let's say not very good with their drivers. There is another point to Nvidia, who usually makes superb driver.
That said however, I heard that the newest AMD driver is a major step up from their old buggy ones and irons out most of the microstutter problems. In that case, the 7990 is quite a good deal for the price of a 970, I must admit.
However, the 7990 is already at its limit, being the older card, while the 970 is just starting out and will only perform better down the lane.
I can go on about this for a month and thank you for messing up mind by saying the 7990 is available for the price of one 970. I mean it was more expensive than the GTX Titan when it was released. I am going mad......
