Hi Guys,

Sometimes the pc will boot properly, but as of late I've been getting Code 71 (pch dxe smm initialization is started) displayed on the motherboard and it just hangs. I've tried using another GPU, swapping in and out RAM sticks and disconnecting my 2 storage hard drives but have had no luck. I've also stress tested the CPU and GPU without any issues. The 4770k had been overclocked before but of late I have left it stock due to it being a bad overclocker. Could it be the CPU or even possibly the Motherboard? Before I order either a new cpu or motherboard, any help would be much appreciated.

I was hoping that the code would be something specific but it appears others have had that issue with q code 71 and it's ranged from bad cpu to bad hdd. You said you disconnected your storage hdd's, so it may be your main boot drive giving issues. It can also mean a cpu is reaching its' oc limits. You did say you left it stock, but just for double checking things have you tried clearing the cmos and setting the bios back to defaults just in case? Maybe something as simple as a missed or stuck setting.

Yes, I tried disconnecting and reconnecting my main drive which was an SSD and thought it might have fixed it. The BIOS setting are all optimized default. Today I tried booting and have got the same code 71 again. So im thinking it's got to be either the CPU or Mobo =( I wish this code 71 was more specific..

Yea unfortunately error codes on pc's are about as conclusive as 'check engine' lights on cars. Did the cpu get removed and reinstalled? (ie, any chance of a bent pin between before and now?) I wish I had a more clear cut answer for you. If the problem is reproduced often enough, maybe see about taking it to a shop. See if they have another test bench cpu to try in your system and boot several times, see if the problem persists. Not sure if a shop would do that, but I don't see why not.
