Bang for buck you say? That would be an FX 6300, and accompanying mobo, probably 150$ for both, and then with the left over 450$ you can get ur GPU. However, the FX 6300 only holds its value because it can pretty much stay on pace with GPU's up to and including the 970. But this is at stock speeds. With even a slight boost the FX 6300 can handle pretty much everything. Yes i5 is better, and even shiny i7's but that's only important when your talking Over 60hz gaming.

BTW that last sentence is the only reason Intel is better. Intel provides smoother performance (barely noticeable as most games bottleneck o. the GPU), Intel is more efficient, and Intel can game well above 100Hz refresh rates. At 60Hz though its likely that an FX 6300 and an i7 4790k will perform almost exactly the same. FX cost 90$ and the 4790k costs like 320$. That's almost 4x the price for the same performance but Intel is "smoother"

Thank for the advice. For the time being, I think I might stick with what rockie recommended. Gonna wait for after Xmas sale to see if I gain anything.
