i5 3570k safe temperatures?

Hello,
I have a couple of questions about temperatures for my 3570k.
The specs of my PC are as follows:
i5 3570k
Asrock Extreme4 z77
8GB Corsair Vengeance LP
Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO
Corsair 300r
3 Corsair fans (I replaced the fans that came with the case)

I have been overclocking my CPU as I am starting a video editing project and could do with some extra power.

1) What are safe temperatures for an overclock? I have got the CPU at 3.7GHz but Prime 95 (very quickly) has caused it to go to 72 degrees.
2) Would an overclock help performance when video editing and if so how much would I need to overclock to see an improvement?

That information is not correct.

Intel's Thermal Specification (Tcase) for the i5 3570K is 67C, which is CPU temperature, not Core temperature. Core temperature is 5C higher than CPU temperature due to sensor location, so Tcase +5 makes the corresponding Core temperature 72C.

This means that mid-70's are safe operating temperatures.

Throttle temperature is 105C.

if i recall correctly you are pretty much safe up to 90c after 90c cpu will start thermal throttling (thereby lowering cpu clock to keep it cool)so as long you are below 90c your fine and yes overclocking will help video editing quite a bot

Yeah I'm using the BIOS. I have previously overclocked it to 4.2GHz and then dropped it back down. I am worried regarding temperatures. However I have just rendered a video in some editing software and the temps havent gone over 60 degrees.

Ah okay, I shall keep going then, I'm just concerned as it's going so high already.

Ah okay thanks. If Prime95 is causing it to go to 72 degrees (which is the hottest it's got to) but video editing with the CPU at 100% usage only goes to 60 degrees would it be safe to continue overclocking?

Yes, however, when testing your temperatures, use only Prime95 version 26.6 - http://windows-downloads-center.blogspot.com/2011/04/prime95-266.html

Always run Small FFT's for testing processor temperatures.

Please post your ambient temperature, as all processor specifications are referenced to 22C Standard Ambient ... and please do read the Temp Guide ... don't just glance at it and dismiss it.

Ambient temps range between 30 degrees to 40 degrees which worries me..

The room temperature is around 22 degrees.
I have brought the CPU down to 3.4GHz but the minimum temps are 27 degrees and the max is 43 degrees.

Okay I've been running Prime 95 in the background and at 100% CPU load the minimum temps are 50 degrees and the max is 57 degrees.
At idle with nothing running apart from Core Temp the minimum temp is 27 degrees and the maximum is 35 degrees

Okay I have done that and here are my temps

Minimum 53 degrees
Maximum 76 degrees

The maximum recommended Vcore for 22 nanometer processors (Core i 3rd and 4th Generation) is 1.300. You might want to work on this. If you're using auto Vcore, please switch to manual settings, as auto sets Vcore higher than needed for stability.

With some experimentation, you may find that you can achieve 4.4 at 1.280.

When Vcore is too high, it affects the longevity of your processor. The term is "Electromigration". It's definitely a bad thing. Google it up and read about it.

Start at 1.200 volts and 4.2GHz. If it's stable, then try 4.3. Increase in 100MHz steps until it BSOD's. Increase Vcore by 40 millivolt steps (0.040 volts) until it's stable.

There are some great Guides on the web. Please read them until you have a solid understanding of how to overclock. :D

I have been tinkering and here are my settings so far:
4.4GHz
1.26v (I am dropping this slowly to try and acheieve lowers temps)
Min 55 degrees
Max 79 degrees

What is a safe temperature for Prime95?
I have also been using Intel Burn Test and was wondering if you knew what a safe temperature for that was also?

Mid 70's are safe for everyday real-world workloads, as well as P95 v26.6 Small FFT's. IBT will push your temperatures higher, where you might see core temperatures in the 80's.

P95 Small FFT's is a steady-state 100% workload which yields steady temperatures. IBT is a fluctuating workload which spikes to 110% and yields fluctuating temperatures.

Here's what it looks like:

Shown above from left to right: Small FFT's, Blend, Linpack and Intel Burn Test.

Notice the steady-state thermal signatures of Small FFT's, which allows accurate measurements of Core temperatures.

Post #6 above shows Intel's Thermal Specifications for your i5 3570K. I highly recommend that you take some time to read the Intel Temperature Guide. There's a link to it in post #6, as well as in my signature here in the lower right hand corner of this post. The Guide will help you to get a clear understanding of how your processor temperatures work, and how to properly test your rig.

Update:
I have got the CPU running at 4.4GHz but am considering decreasing it to 4.3GHz for temperature's sake. My voltage is 1.260. When running LinPack my temps reach 75 degrees but it appears to be stable. Prime95 also looks to be stable but I will run an overnight test tonight and temps are around 73 degrees. However when I run Intel Burn for more than 20 passes it causes my PC to restart (I presume due to lack of voltage) however I do not want to bring the voltage up any more due to temps.

Do you have any suggestions for the course of action I should take? Would it be wise to drop the overclock down to 4.3GHz and if so how much performance would I lose?
