Id go with the G3258 because it is so cheap. I can not understand folks who want to spend $100 on an i3 only to upgrade it later when a locked i5 is only marginally more expensive and would not require an upgrade. The pentium will OC pretty high on the stock cooler too. Or just pony up a few extra bucks and buy the i5 off the bat, BF4 will thank you for the extra cores.

Not totally true, A lopt of manufacturers have released BIOS updates to allow overclocking of the pentium on their lower end H81 boards. Unless something has changed that I am not aware of.

Oh, well then maybe I should go overclock my Pentium :p

Yeah read up a bit first just to make sure nothing has changed but I am pretty sure that was part of the big buzz about these chips when they released was that they could OC on cheap boards making them excellent budget option.

I would actually go for the Core i3 instead of the Pentium CPU even though it is more expensive for better "future proofing".

Two recent games that have been released will not run on the Pentium CPU. Those games are Dragon Age: Inquisition and Far Cry 4. They require a CPU that can process 4 threads otherwise the games will simply crash. One core can process 1 thread. Both Core i3 and Pentium are dual core CPUs; however, the Core i3 has Hyper Threading which creates two virtual cores which allows it to process 4 threads.

To be completely honest I don't think either of these CPU's belong in the same sentence as the word "future proof" There are already several titles that show an i3 having a serious deficiency. The market is slowly moving away from dual cores and even though HT helps it is often nowhere near the performance of actually having 4 "real" cores. That is why I suggested skipping the dual cores all together and just spending the extra $50 bucks on an i5 and be done.

True but when on a budget $50 is actually quite a lot.

Pretty much any modern i5 even the lowest cost option will be plenty for games current and for the foreseeable future. I just hate seeing folks waste $100 on an i3 that isn't even what they want, best bet is to try and save a few more bucks and go i5 right off the bat. I think you will be very glad you did. Good luck man.
