Bought a new shuttle gaming PC (detailed spec pasted below), it comes assembled but without an OS installed. It does however have a Windows 8.1 OS licence included (not sure exactly which one).

I have MSDN subscription so can download any Microsoft OS for free. I'm used to Windows 7 ultimate - would you guys advise 8.1 over 7 ultimate? I'm leaning towards 8.1 just to give it a try. I only really play a handful of games (Diablo 3, Counter-Strike, Football Manager) so not exactly cutting edge!

Worth pointing out the shuttle pc doesn't have an optical drive so I'm going to have to work out how to install Windows from a usb stick.

Also, does anyone know how the Intel 530 120gb SSD will perform compared to a Samsung Evo 840 250gb? Reason I ask is I have a Samsung Evo 840 in my laptop and it isn't working very well at all (think there is an issue with my laptop) so was thinking about removing it and putting the IDE disk back in. Could use the Samsung Evo 840 in the new PC.

Any advice appreciated as I am very much a novice and remember how much of a NIGHTMARE trying to set up Windows on my Samsung Series 7 gamer laptop was (harrowing experience). Are there any specific settings I need to look out for in BIOS before I install Windows for the first time (SSD specific maybe)?

Solution
hey installing windows is easy enoug:
- download exe file from their website or burn an iso file from the dvd if you have one. Copy that on a usb.
- turn on pc and enter bios --> set boot from to your usb. Then restart and install windows ( make sure you disconnect your hard drives HDD if you have any to make sure windows get's installed on your ssd.

I would try windows 8.1. It's faster and they will drop support for windows 7 at the end of 2015.
As for the SSD i dont think you will notice much of a difference.

I was a big windows 8/8.1 hater but I finally upgraded to windows 8.1 for performance reasons. (Better SSD support, and most drivers are now being written targeting windows 8.1) I was able to switch and barely noticed a difference by using classic shell and turning off tons of annoying things about windows 8.1. Turned off things like active corners, and I turned off the charms bar. Also it boots directly to desktop, I never see the metro screen.

So I say go with 8.1 + classic shell.

When installing windows just make sure you set your sata drives to be AHCI not ide mode. It's not a big deal if you don't you just lose hotswap compatibility and I think some performance. I also agree that the differences between different ssd's is negligible.

840 evo beats intel ssds hands down, but the 850 pro beats the 840 evo.
i picked up an 850 pro but i'm having ram issues on a rebuild so i can't tell u anything about it. i avoided the 850 evo cause that 3-bit feature seems a bit too new for me and seems mostly untested in the real world. theres samsung speed boost for samsung ssds, it makes a ram cache in your free system memory and effectively doubles your ssd performance speed(or at least 1.8x) and it will work with your 840 evo. according to the samsung website, it says it will only work with specific models of samsung ssds, but not any other brand of ssd.
