I have recorded a few minutes over a long audio file. The short file has the file name . How do I recover the longer unnamed part. Is there software that can identify it?

If you recorded over it then only a backup copy will do. Nothing much on the consumer level can be recovered from under the new bits that were written. There is some stuff at the professional level that can 'try'. They do that by moving the heads slightly left and right of the track to try an pick up the ghost image of what used to be there. Most people dont want to spend the kind of money that professional services charge....
