I purchased a computer in the summer and it came with this usb wireless adapter. Long story short I got rid of that computer and built my own with Windows 8. I know it was working before I purchased the computer, and a little while when I had it. Since I built my computer I have had it wired to the router. Now I am unable to do this and tried to use the netgear wireless adapter. When I plug it in, nothing happens. No message to say a device was connected, the little light on the usb device itself does not flicker, nothing. It is a Netgear Wireless USB Adapter WG111v3. I tried using the software on the website, but the program will not open. When I go into device manager, it's not there. I thought it might be windows 8.1 but apparently Netgear had updated drivers that work with the device on windows 8.1, but I have had no luck as the device itself is not connecting to the computer. I don't know what to do. Does anyone know how these devices work?

These devices can be finicky. I use an older Belkin one that I sometimes have to plug into a few USB ports to get it to work.

I would try your adapter in another machine and see if you can get it working. I have worn out more than a few of them at this point, and it simply may need to be replaced.
