Hi all I was all set come January to get two of the OCUK Cooler Design 970 cards for 970 SLI when I noticed that Overclockers had the Palit 970 on sale today. Both are Blower fan 970 cards which for my build is probably best which should I get?

As you can see there is a fair bit of price difference at moment. Perfectly willing pay the extra bit won't if I don't need to.

Going to be running the 970 SLI setup in a Bit Fenix Phenom case.

Didn't I say you made a good choice?
Silly me.
You made a good choice. ;)
An especially good choice considering the fairly compact case the build is going in.
Enjoy.

There will be a difference, but not really performance wise. The palit card is known to be quite loud and I have heard reports of coil whine. The OcUK variant was custom manufactured for them and has some extra features supposedly.

"Infact Gibbo improved the design by changing the containers in which the inductors are located for better quality items to help reduce and eliminate any possibility of coil whine."
- Quote from their product page

The Nvidia 970 reference cooler will be quieter and perform somewhat better (cooling wise) than the older blower design, but the Palit is a heck of alot cheaper.

Yeah it's £160 cheaper to buy two Palit 970 at moment. That is certainly not something to sneeze at. Looks like I need decide do I want a cooler system and quieter and less chance of coil whine or do I want to save £160.

Thanks for advice either way 970 SLI should be awesome for gaming.

Ps which would you go for out of curiosity.

Yeah 970 SLI will be absolutely killer for gaming, will crush any game out there for sure.

Personally I think I would have to go for the more expensive option, I hate coil whine, I had it on my previous 770 really badly. The added bonus of better cooling and lower noise will always be good for an SLI setup aswell. Palit isn't a bad brand at all, I have their Jetstream 980 and have had zero coil whine and nice low noise and temps when gaming, but I have heard that this particular 970 model they do really isn't that good.

The OcUK one also has an extra year of warranty over the Palit which is always a plus. If you have the money to spend I think you will be pleased with the higher quality option, but the Palit cards really are a steal at that price also, definitely a tough decision.

I've decided to go with my original idea and get two 970 Cooler Design cards for my SLI setup. While it's going cost me £160 more I don't think it's worth cutting corners like yourself a fair few people I've spoke to have that the Palit 970 is hotter, louder and has bad coil whine. I expect those issues to increase further when in SLI which is not what I'm after want an enjoyable gaming experience. The 970 Cooler Design from what I've read and heard is built better has a better blower fan and better build quality has the longer warranty and simply looks to be the more well constructured model of the two.

Likely in terms of gaming performance it's probably not worth it to buy the 970 Cooler Design over the Palit 970. I think in terms of making sure your case is less hot your system is less loud it is probably going to be worth it. Seems like in this situation paying the premium is going to deliver that premium experience.

I'm going be running this in a small case so things such as heat is something I really needed to consider and don't think cutting corners is worth it in this situation.

Thanks for the advice.

The OC cooler isn't the same as that used by Palit, AFAIK it's the fully fledged GTX Titan/GTX780Ti type adapted to the GTX970 PCB.
The Kitguru review is also very favourable: http://www.kitguru.net/components/graphic-cards/zardon/ocuk-geforce-gtx-970-nvidia-970-cooler-edition-review/1/
And the backplate has a useful trick for SLI users: http://www.kitguru.net/components/graphic-cards/zardon/ocuk-geforce-gtx-970-nvidia-970-cooler-edition-review/2/

Reading that apparently it's the 980 PCB that is used in the OCUK cards. The cooler on these cards should be far better than the Palit 970 if it's the proper Titan/780Ti one as that is a brilliant blower fan. I think I've made the right choice in deciding get couple of these. Plus it does sound like they have done there best designing these cards to eliminate coil whine.
