weird hard drive bug: a hard drive is mistaken for another hard drive by windows

hi there,
this is going to be a long story and a bit complicated too, I hope you guys can bear with me.

The problem right now for me is that a simple switch to a new hard drive enclosure has corrupted multiples drives that were connected to my desktop computer.

I am currently using Windows 7 64 bit for my desktop.
I have a few esata hard drive enclosures connected to my computer.

Recently, one of the enclosures broke down so I bought a new USB 3.0 enclosure and transferred the hard drives over.

I haven't done anything other than installing them.
but after installing it, 2 out of the 3 drives that were installed to the new enclosure got corrupted, let's call them drive A,B.

2 other drives from other enclosures also got corrupted, let's call them drive D,C.

I have no idea what caused these problems.
These are the situations for my current hard drives:

1. Hard Drive D: Windows now thinks it's hard drive A.
For example,
when I plug in only hard drive D, windows thinks I have plugged in hard drive A. And I do see the the partition for hard drive A in my file explorer. However, when I attempt to open the files, all of them are corrupted according to windows.

2. Hard Drive A: for some reason, windows now thinks it's an unallocated drive, whereas nothing was ever done to it. when I scan the drive using a data recovery program like final data, nothing shows up.

3. Hard Drive B: in disk management, it simply says dynamic invalid, whereas the hard drive was never dynamic in the first place.

4. Hard Drive C: windows flat out doesn't recognize it anymore.
In Bios, it now says the hard drive has 0 GB.

This is something that I've never seen before and it's so complicated that I don't even know how to tackle it.

These are the two things that I want to do:
1. Recover the data if possible.
2. Recover or repair the hard drives so that they can be used like new drives. for example, I don't want windows to think drive D is A....

These are the things that I have tried:
1. Try my hard drives on another windows OS, no luck at all.
2. System recovery to an older date, I'm not sure why I tried this, but it didn't change anything.
3. As supposed to connecting them through the enclosure, I connected them directly. no luck at all too.

does anyone have any advice for this?

If you have the patience, I would examine each of the drives with a disc editor, eg DMDE (freeware).

http://dmde.com/

Could you show us DMDE's Partitions windows for each drive?

BTW, what is the model number of the new enclosure? Were you using eSATA or USB for your new enclosure?

Are the drives now being tested via a SATA port on the motherboard or via their enclosures?

As far as the enclosure messing up drives, that's entirely possible. It could be an issue with the power it's supplying to the drives causing issues with them.

The drive that shows size of 0 likely needs hardware repair.

As for the other drives, are you sure they weren't in a RAID configuration in the enclosure? That would explain the issues Windows has with recognizing the partitions. Also be aware that some HDD docks/enclosures don't pass through the drive specific information which can lead to Windows confusing them. This is especially true of docks that connect more than one drive over USB.

hey guys, thanks for the responses,
Mattios:
I'm looking to try in on a mac, but I haven't had the chance yet.

DataMedic:
I'm definitely sure that they weren't in any RAID configuration, I had all my enclosures in JBOD mode.

Can you elaborate more on what you mean by the enclosures not passing drive information? what kind of drive information??? so are you saying let's say I have 2 enclosures and 1 hard drive, and I connect the hard drive through both the enclosures(at different times), will windows not know it was reading the same thing??

I've never had this problem before. It's definitely something about my new enclosure that screwed everything up.

fzabkar:
I won't have access to my comoputer for a few days, but once I'm back, I will post the logs.

The hard drive enclosure that I bought is Orico 9558Ru3, and it is connected via a USB 3.0 cable.

I have tried testing the drives both via the new enclosure and the sata port, I'm out of luck with both.
