Need Help! Potential SATA Controller Issue - "Cannot Find Storage Device"

I have an older off the shelf HP computer (AMD Phenom circa 2009). Recently I woke it up from sleep mode to find an error message saying that their was a critical HDD failure. So, naturally I re-booted. It started up fine but once I started to transfer some files to an external HDD it crashed again, this time on re-boot it stated it couldn't find storage device. I tried plugging the HDD into other SATA ports but this led to the same issues recurring in different orders: either crash shortly after reaching desktop, or storage device couldn't be detected.

I took the HDD to a friends house and accessed it through one of his SATA ports. It seemed to be working fine. We had it plugged in just long enough to transfer some critical files onto my external. All seemed well in the world...

So, with joy in my heart I purchased a new WD 1Tb Blue and plugged her in. Loaded Win 8.1 via flash drive (a legit copy and everything) and, Viola! the wheels were a crankin'. I loaded up some drivers and played with it for a few minutes. All was good... or so I thought. Shortly there after, she crashed again - same issues: either crash shortly after reaching desktop, or storage device couldn't be detected. At this point I did have the old HDD plugged into another SATA port and was able to access it, if that has any bearing on the situation,

So, I really have no idea what the issue may be (I'm a noob), but was told it probably is the MOBO SATA controller, resulting in me needing A) New MOBO or B) New computer. Any ideas on what my issue truly is and what may be the best course of action? Could I go on the cheap and replace the MOBO until I am ready to buy a better computer, or is that not worth trying?

Solution
The crashing after desktop could have been caused by your CPU overheating, though that shouldn't have any effect with the failure on detecting the HDD.

I tried unplugging the old one and used new SATA cables. Still having the same issues... I will probably end up having to get a new MOBO.

Also, I did clean up the fan and CPU heat sink while I had it apart. I applied the thermal paste and everything worked afterwards (at least through the install of Win 8.1). Could this have effected anything?
