I'm having a wireless problem with my Motorola SBG-6580. Wired connections are rock solid with zero problems.

I've had the 6580 up and running for about 6 months. My current plan with Time Warner is for 20 MB down and 2 MB up. Wired Cat 5e speeds are always 20 MB to 22 MB down and 2 MB to 2.2 MB on the up side. When the wireless is working correctly, the wireless speeds are 18 MB to 21 MB down and 2 to 2.1 MB up. These are constant wireless speeds anywhere in my 3,000+ sq. ft. two story home. The 6580 is on 2nd floor and I even get those great wireless speeds in the basement at the furthest and weakest signal area. Sounds great, right?

The problem is that every so often the 6580 will go into a reduced power mode. It maintains a good wireless speed while the device in the same room with the 6580, but once I am 20 feet away the download speed falls to about 5 MB everywhere in the house. The upload speed remains good at about 2 MB, but the download speed drops from 20 MB to about 5 MB. A simple power off and power on cycle of the 6580 always fixes the problem. It's back up to the 20 MB. Sometimes it's OK for a few days, sometimes a couple of weeks, but the reduced power mode comes back.

I've tried channels 1, 6, 11, and I've even tried 3, and 9. Same result. OK for a while, but the reduced power problem comes back. I finally settled on "Auto" for the channel setting. It seems to hold the full power mode longer.

A walk around my house using a couple of wi-fi analyzer apps on my Android phone tells me that my neighborhood is a busy wireless place. Most of the home network traffic seems to be on channels 6 and 11, but my closest neighbor has a PS4 that shows up along with 2 Netgear units on weird channels like 2 and 8. He has his home network on 11. I have a home phone system that operates at 5.8. We all know that the 5.8 technology phones also use the 2.4 band as well. The only issue with that is that this phone system never bothered my old Westell DSL wireless combo unit that ran for 5 years without a problem. Slow ... yes, but problem free.

Am I experiencing some kind of interference that causes my 6580 to go into a reduced power mode, or is Time Warner reducing it for me? Once it goes into a reduced power mode, it will not go back to full power unit I power cycle it off and then on. Below are my current 6580 settings:

Service Provider: Time Warner
Internet Plan: 20 MB down and 2 MB up
Output Power Setting: 100%
Bandwidth: 20 MHz
Channel: Auto
WMM: Off
Power Save Support: Off
IP Flood Detection: Off

Thanks for your help!

Solution
I would run the router on channel 1 as this will have the least interference from what you describe.

Your modem/router may need to be replaced. Than again, if you are doing a lot of downloading, you may be getting throttled.
