so i want to upgrade my gpu. im currently using a gtx 750 ti. i was wondering what was better for the price, an r9 290 for €175,- or a gtx 770 4GB for €200 - €300.

(€1,- = $1,22)

the only problem with the 290 is you really do need exceptional case cooling ,its a 90c+ card - that is HOT HOT HOT
the only reason its cheap is because they dont have a direct competitor to the gtx 970 at this moment in time

You don't need exceptional case cooling for the 290. Any aftermarket 290 is capable of cooling itself on a test bench just fine with temps in the 80s. All Nvidia cards here in Canada are ridiculously overpriced

GTX 750(ti) cost as much as R7 265 which performs better
GTX 760 costs as much as R9 280 which performs better
GTX 770 costs as much as R9 290 which performs better
GTX 780 costs $200 more than R9 290 which performs the same as a 780
780ti costs as much as 290 crossfire
GTX 970 costs over $100 more than R9 290 which performs slightly worse
GTX 980 costs almost as much as R9 295x2

any card that gets to 80c+ on an open test bench DOES need exceptional case cooling mate really.
& yes the price differences are the same here in the uk.
The 2 nvidia cards that have a viable market ( & they are the best 2 nvidia cards ever produced imo) are the 750ti & the gtx 970
the 750ti because it gives thouroughly decent performance for a budget card & has such incredibly low power draw it suits people with crap psu's & prebuilds who want a cheap easy upgrade option from integrated graphics.
& the 970 because its sheer graphical grunt comes with insanely low temps & power draw.
Im a big fan of amd card upto & including the 280/280x - the 290/290x cards though need decent cases & cooling for a fact - you cant go throwing one in any old matx case with crap airflow & wonder why it hits 100c+ & throttles down.
I myself went from a 280x to a gtx 970 - performance is about 20% better which doesnt seem a lot for the outlay but Im runnig in a matx htpc silverstone rig in the lounge. It has limited cooling & the 280x hit 80c regular ,heating the rest of the system up - the 970 sits at 62c on full load!! thats why its become the biggest seller in the last 2 months ,not just because of the performance but because it can fit into just about any system or case with a half decent 450w+ psu.
