I've been doing a lot of researching and comparing, and here's my pcpartpicker list so far:
http://pcpartpicker.com/p/BVrmRB
CPU: Intel i5-4690K 3.5 GHz
Motherboard: MSI Z97 Gaming 7 ATX LGA1150
RAM: G.Skill Sniper Series 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3-1866 Memory
(I'm sure there is cheaper RAM out there that is just as good but I'll pay a few extra bucks for these sticks that are shaped like guns!)
Hard Drive: Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 7200 RPM
GPU: MSI GeForce GTX 970 4GB Twin Frozr V
Case: Thermaltake Chaser MK-1 ATX Full Tower Case
(not set it stone, but I definitely want a full tower size case and an ATX size motherboard)
OS: Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 (OEM) (64-bit)
Monitor: Asus VS239H 23.0" approx. $150 for this monitor. I am looking for two recommendations for monitors. One monitor for if I decide I want to get something cheap but kind of good that will last me until I upgrade, such as the above monitor. Or a better monitor between $250 and $300 in case I decide to get something a bit better.
Keyboard: I haven't picked one yet, but I want a clicky clacky mechanical keyboard. I was thinking maybe a blue switch type. Backlighting is a plus, and I prefer green backlighting better than blue backlighting better than red backlighting, in that order. I haven't decided if I want to go cheap or pay a little more, but a loud and clacky mechanical it must be!
PSU: maybe 600W or 650W. What PSU do you guys recommend?
Optical Drive: I don't really care, as long as it loads CD-ROMs, plays DVDs and maybe plays bluerays. any suggestions?
Mouse: I'm looking for one option for if I choose to get a nice gaming mouse (I prefer wired, I don't want to have to charge it) and another option for if I choose to get something cheaper for now and upgrade later.
CPU cooler: rather than shying away from liquid cooling, I want to learn what I need to learn to be comfortable with it. But maybe to start off with I should just get a closed circuit system for only the cpu that I don't need to refill or anything. A few years from now I want to have an intricate colorful liquid cooling setup, but for this build a closed loop system is good for now. I think the case I chose has room for a radiator on the top part, even room for a larger radiator. I don't want to rely on fans alone, and I may overlock eventually, so what liquid cooling should I get?
Overall, I have some money coming my way in a few months and it's time to get a gaming pc. The only computer I have right now is a 2011 macbook air. Since its a mac that means no Windows, no Steam, no good gaming. I play world of warcraft too, but on this mac I have to use the lowest settings and even then I only get 20 fps. I want to play on Ultra with over 60 fps and I want to be able to play games on Steam and games like assassin's creed unity and whatever else I've been missing. So what parts do you guys think is best for my situation?
