I just bought a msi gtx 970 and 6 sticks of g skill ripjaw x 2x4gb duel channel ram. I cant get any combination of new and old parts to work at home or at the computer store I took it to to help make sure everything will work. Apparently they got it to work at the store but when I got it home it keeps freezing on the mother board splash screen and after I brought it back to them its doing the same thing everytime now. The 4 guys that looked at it said it was the new gpu and their manager insisted it was the motherboard. Even tested it with my old ram and gpu and its doing the same thing now. (everything worked fine with the old parts in the old case before they touched it.) I think The only thing left to do is update the motherboar, cpu and maybe the power supply that im unable to rule out for the lack of having a spare.

In my computer right now (all about 5 years old now)
Msi x58 pro
Gen 1 i7 920
Corsair gs700 psu
Msi gtx465
3x2gb of some no name ram

New parts
Msi gtx 970
Ripjaw x 6x4gb ram
New case and new hard drive

So my queation for you is ..... what is a good motherboard cpu and psu combo to get that will work with the parts I already have. I can spend about $700 but id prefer to keep it under $500. Or if any of you know what the problem im having is and can help me give somthing new to try because im baffled and so are the people that looked at it.

Thanks for your help :)

I'd say off the bat that the most likely component that's common to any combination of parts is the PSU, that's what I'd target first. That's a very decent PSU though so maybe try another PSU before you buy one if you can borrow one or maybe get them to install a different one at the store for testing purposes. It's very unlikely for two different sets of RAM and two different GPUs to display the same symptoms unless the board or PSU are the culprit but the CPU COULD be the fault.

Have you tried using fewer memory modules, or a single module. That older i7 might have issues with that many modules or the module speed regardless that the board supports it, the memory controller onboard the CPU might struggle with six DIMMS or memory speed that isn't supported.
