Asus Strix GTX 970 Coil Whine; Is there a solution other than V-Sync?

Guys I am building a PC with the GTX 970 from Asus. Choosing it mainly because of the solid build and competitive pricing combined with the great support Asus provides in India.

However, I am very worried about Coil Whine issues reported. I'd love to have a silent PC especially since I am migrating from the PlayStation 3 which goes on all day without a fuss.

Have there been a solution to the coil whine issue (like driver updates or a latest batch with hardware evolved or something!) I have a nice 32-inch 60 Hz LED TV so do not want to V-Sync and restrict to 30 fps.

Also, hearing rumours about a GTX 960. Should i wait for it and see if that is better? There is also a couple of 970's one from Zotac and one from Galaxy which are supposedly "Reference" design though I don't recall Nvidia launching any! Are these advisable? Used to despise reference cards and their cooling solutions!

I didn't experience coil whine while watching movies. It was in games that required lots of gpu power mostly. It didn't spoil...

Thanks for the response. Any idea if it might get too loud for comfort. Loads of forums with people ranting about the whine being too loud for comfort and RMA'in the cards make me worry. YouTube videos barely give a proper picture of the issue. I game for long hours and also very particular about the sound-stage experience of the games I play and hence the dilemma if this might spoil the overall experience.

Thanks again!

I had a 6970 a few years back that was notorious for it.

You can RMA your card, but it could be that particular series of cards that has that issue if you're looking to replace it.

Another option would be to soundproof your case with noise dampening foam, but that can reduce its cooling efficiency greatly.

Btw I am thinking about buying two of them in SLI so anyone knows if it will have the annoying coil whining, it only is noticeable from the card(s) themselves or also through the speakers out via your sound card? Because if that is the case then I suppose no one would want it.

Thanks.. Just a small clarification though, was the coil whine in your 6970 bad/loud enough to spoil a movie watching experience or a game's sound-stage? Sorry for being a noob but these YouTube videos on coil whine seem so unobtrusive but the rants on the forums make it sound more than that!

I don't yet have the card but i'm sure it's from the card's coil and not from the speakers..

Yes kingston_ked I believe now so as well. I asked around in the meantime during this thread and at first I thought the frequencies of the coil whining would be heard through the audio making it an annoying circus of irritating cacophony sounds. But luckily it's only the card itself that can make those sounds and won't be heard through your speakers. But still this can be annoying too if the coil whining is too loud....

I know the answer has been chosen but if I were you I would wait with buying a gtx970. Maybe the batches right now are better but I am severely dissatisfied with the amount of noise coming out of the card during certain games due to coil whine.

The only plus side to my card is that it does not have coil whine in all games. Going from 0 coil whine (Battlefield 4) to unplayable loud (Far Cry 4).
You also have the option to capping the frames using other means than vsync. Which helps reduce the noise to more playable levels. (Though in my opinion when you pay this kind of money you shouldn't have to mess around with anything anymore).

My recommendation: Wait for a new batch.
