I would like to migrate to an SSD but I don't want to make my HDD as small as my SSD and I have no type of backup. So I want to copy a certain amount of things onto my SSD not everything on my HDD. I did some research also and it says to copy everything to a backup but I don't have a backup.

There is a way to do it without a backup (shrink partition, create new partition, copy data to second partition, clone to SSD).

But do yourself a huge favor - buy a USB flash drive to use for backups. You can get a 32 GB drive for about $15-$20 now, a 64 GB for about $30 on sale. There is no excuse not to have one. Back up your important files at least once a week. The $20 you spend now will save you $400-$1000 in the future when (not if) your HDD dies. And you may not even get all (or most) of your data back after paying.
