The 285 is presumably faster than the 280 (not tested in the chart below), so the 280 and GTX 760 are really right about the same performance level. If performance is the same, you need to look at some other factors.

The arguments for the GTX 760 would be the fact that it offers a lot more unique graphics settings (TXAA, FXAA, HBAO+, DSR, etc.), it will allow you to enable PhysX, it has Adaptive VSync, there are quite a few more games that are optimized for Nvidia hardware, and it comes with Nvidia driver support. If none of those things matter to you, then the 280 might be a consideration. For me personally, PhysX, Adaptive VSync, and DSR are settings I wouldn't want to go without if given the choice...

The only problem is that the R9 285 is way too much expensive here in Brazil for no real reason , the model prices (starting with PowerColor) start at around 1400BRL and the R9 280X is also around this base price.
In the other hand , the GTX 760 (starting with PNY) starts at around 820BRL and the R9 280 (again with PowerColor) at around 860BRL, this way it ain't easy to just pick one model.
I was mostly aiming at the Zogis model of the GTX 760 and the Gigabyte model from the R9 280.
But i still have some time to do a more elaborated research on all of the available models , since the money i was going to use on the graphic card has gone into a new pair of headers for my truck.

Also , i have to thank you for the extense and very complete overview!
