Same brand, different series RAM

I'm currently running 2 4GB Crucial Ballistix Sport sticks on an MSI Z97 Gaming 5, and I was wondering if adding 2 4GB Crucial Ballistix Elite sticks would work. My main question is whether the brand AND series have to be the same for it to work. Should I just get 16GB already paired instead?

Solution
1600 mhz vs 1866 mhz gives next to no benefit. Only time you might notice it is if you have an APU or do some heavy grahics things in photoshop or CAD. In games and everyday usage, no difference. Arma 3 being the exception I know of. In that case, you can loosen timings and OC the ram to 1866 mhz. I've found 11-11-11-30 works for me with Ballistix Sport. Might have to add a bit of DDR voltage too, 0,03-0,05.
1.53v - 1.55v in BIOS.
