Solution
Depending on how your wifi is setup and how your antennas are positioned, that alone could account for all the problems your running in to. Make an experiment of it. Do the tests and run some programs your noticing you have considerable lag on via Wifi. Then run a cable directly to your router from your computer, disable your wifi and do it all over again. See if it has any effect. If not then you've at least taken one factor out of the problem.

Speedtest is showing around 28.2mbps but i hardly get around 1 mbps..Will it be better if i turn to ethernet..or is there any problem with my router or anything..By the way all my drivers are fully updated and i am using windows 8.1 pro which i installed recently..

Where are you downloading from that you only get 1Mb/s? There's a good chance that it's just an overloaded or distant server.

I plugged my friend's ethernet via the router to my pc and voila the download speed boosted to 8.6mbps..I dont know whether how it happened but wireless was the main cause..Thanx a lot and Merry Christmas..

If you have the option of connecting a 3rd party antenna in to your wireless card, I'd recommend it. Something that can be repositioned and allow you to sort out the exact angles would likely do wonders for your wireless. Glad to help, Merry Christmas.
