When I have a game open my screen will go red or white and then will shut off. My computer stays on with no indicators on the motherboard but I need to turn it off holding the power button down. When I power back up my computer the red CPU LED will turn on and the computer does not boot up. At this point the only way to power off is by unplugging the PSU. before I noticed the red LED I had replaced the video card and taken out the RAM and put back in to start my troubleshooting. Once I noticed the red LED I removed my CPU to check for damage or bent pins and it is fine. I've kept an eye on the CPU temps also and they havent gone above 40c. Anyone know what might be causing this?

Sounds like either a GPU driver issue or an issue with the GPU itself. It's possible it could be related to the board or cpu but it's much less likely as they are not commonly involved when there are color or artifact issues onscreen. Make sure the GPU card is installed in the PCIe x16 slot #1. make sure there is no shavings or other debris in the slot. Make sure the card is completely seated, locked in place and screwed down to the case.

Make sure all power connectors to the GPU are fully seated. This could also be an issue related to voltage. What is the brand and model numbers of your GPU, PSU and CPU?

GPU was my first thought and I replaced it and the same issue happened with the other also. I've made sure all of the drivers are up to date. Its seated correctly and I cleaned out the dust as I was replacing it. I have made sure all of the power supply connections are snug also.

I've been using this set up for near 2 years now with no issues.

GPU- Nvidia GeForce CTX 550 Ti
PSU- Thermaltake TR2 600HL2NC
CPU- AMD FX(tm)-8350 Eight-Core

I'd almost guarantee it's the PSU. The Thermaltake TR2 accounts for probably 60%, at a guess, of the PSU related issues I see here at Tom's.

It's a "replace immediately" rated Tier 5 PSU. In nearly every case I've seen that involved an installed TR2 PSU, the PSU was the issue. In fact, it's what brought me to Tom's in the first place regarding one used in a clients rig that had problems. My very first post here in fact.

You want something at least Tier 3 and it's very highly recommended that it be Tier 2B or higher if you're using a gaming card or overclocking.

I'll replace the PSU asap then hopefully thats all it is! Thanks for your help- if it still happens after I replace it I'll come back to this thread :)

Sounds good. I'll be glad to help you further if that doesn't solve the issue. Since that unit only requires a 500w PSU, and unless you plan on upgrading the GPU in the near future, the Antec VP-450 is an excellent unit, very affordable at under thirty bucks and comes highly recommended. If you do plan to upgrade the GPU, you will want to get a unit now that will be capable of supporting whatever GPU you plan to upgrade to.
