I've read in the official ATI page that this card requires a 400w or greater PSU. But i've also read threads in which people say that it works with as low as 180w. Now, this card does not consume more Than 20 watts, so why exactly does it say in the page that it requires 400watts ? I'm gonna post my PC specs If it helps at all

Model: HP Pavilion Slimline s5100la

Processor: Intel Pentium dual core e5200 2.5ghz

2GB RAM

Current ( integrated) graphics card: Intel GMA 3100

PSU: 220 watts

Yes, I know that this card is far from being one of the best. Yes, i know that my CPU is a slimtower, and I can't find any PSU with anything more Than 300w. Please people, that is NOT what I'm asking. All I want to know is: Will it work?

PLEASE ENLIGHTEN ME!!!

The Radeon HD 5450 only draws 13 Watts when running Furmark.

You shouldn't have any problem powering your system with that graphics card and PSU.

Total Power Supply Wattage is NOT the crucial factor in determining power supply adequacy!!! Sufficient Total Combined Continuous Power/Current Available on the +12V Rail(s) is the most critical factor.

What do I have to look for in these rails?

On the PSU's label it should specify the PSU's maximum combined +12V power in Watts and/or current in Amperes rating.

For your system you should be looking for a +12V rating of at least 144 Watts or 12 Amps.

I would suspect it's something like 16 Amps. That is definitely more than enough to power your system with a Radeon HD 5450.

Anyone that just looks at the PSU's total Wattage doesn't know what they're talking about anyway.

So If it says there's more Than 12 amps that's enough? Are you sure? Because in ATI's website it says that a 400w PSU with 22amps on the rails are requiered. Which is odd, considering the card consumes 20W at most.

400 Watts, is what AMD/ATI claims, is supposed to be the minimum system power requirement based on a PC system configured with an Intel Core i7 3.2GHz 130 Watt TDP processor. Even that is wrong. Any PSU with a maximum combined +12V rating of 16 Amps would work. That means that a PSU like the Seasonic SS-250TFX 250 Watt PSU, that has a maximum combined +12V current rating of 20 Amps, would work perfectly fine with an Intel Core i7 3.2GHz 130 Watt TDP processor and a Radeon HD 5450.

Don't believe everything that the ATI website stupidly says. Even if the graphics card only required a maximum of one Watt they would still say that the minimum power supply requirement is 400 Watts.

So I'm good to go with more Than 12 amps? No need to buy another PSU?
