What can I upgrade on my computer to make games run faster?

Hello, Josh here

When I first built my PC, I thought it was going to be a decent-running gaming computer, able to handle video games like Battlefield 4, Far Cry or basically any graphically high demanding games. Yet, the games would still stutter and lag even on the lowest of settings set. Sometimes my PC would just run terribly slow, making it hard to do the things I love doing on my computer.

So today, I came to ask what can I do to help improve my computer's performance. What parts should I upgrade? I just need some professional assistance in choosing the right parts for a good, gaming computer (Able to run games like Arma or Battlefield)

Here are my specs

Gigabyte Technology Co (System Manufacturer)
System Model H57M-USB3
64-bit Operating System
Intel Core i3 CPU 550
DirectX 10
4Gb Ram
NVIDIA Geforce GTX 660 (Graphics card)
3771 MB Total available graphics memory
1.8 TB Hard drive

If you guys would like any more information about my computer, please ask.

Ah, that's better. Yes, the older i3-550 dual...

You never mentioned what your processor is. And 4 GB RAM is very marginal for modern games. Even tho most are still 32 bit coded, and can only access 4GB, Win and its housekeeping can eat up lots of your RAM. Especially if you have many background pgms. running at boot.

Oh sorry, my processor is Intel Core i3 CPU 550.

I was thinking about getting more ram earlier on, an optimization program I installed onto my computer said that I was using up 50% of my ram currently. So I'm currently thinking on getting more ram for my PC, meanwhile though... is there any more parts that could need some upgrading? Just making sure all the necessities for a good computer is noted down.

JUst buy a brand new 2x4gb set of ram. like hyper fury x or gskill ripjaws or something.

could go with a new i5. or i7 if you have the money.

gpu will be ok for now but it is starting to age.

Ah, that's better. Yes, the older i3-550 dual core is pretty weak for modern gaming. As you can see in Tom's Gaming CPU Hierarchy Chart, the old i3-550 is down amongst the older, slower weaker Phenoms and Athlons.

That is going to be a bottleneck to online gaming on a busy server where it has to keep track of up to 64 other players, handle game code, as well as handle the frame buffer for the GTX 660.

You need to increase your memory to 8GB and see if you can find a used quad core for your MB that is in the 3+ GHz range. Or...
It may be time to move from the old 11556 socket platform to a new system.

I would definitely switch out the cup and get a current i5, 4GB of ram is fine but if you wanna have a lot open all the time I would suggest getting 8GB, 1 more thing you could do if you like fast load times is a SSD.
