Hi all first time posting anything here so I apologise if I did anything wrong. I know they are numerous forums about this issue but hopefully someone has found a solution that will work for me.

SPECS:

POWERSUPPLY: SilverStone Strider Plus 1000W S
OS: Microsoft Windows 8.1 Ultimate
MOTHERBOARD: GIGABYTE X58A-UD7
CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU 930 @ 2.80GHz
HARD DRIVE: Western Digital Caviar Black
GRAPHICS CARD:
SSD PRIMARY: Kingston SSDNow V300 120GB
SSD SECONDARY: OCZ VERTEX 80GB
MONITOR: Acer K222HQL 21.5in Widescreen LCD

So my graphics card was in desperate need of an upgrade. I have been using a Nvidia GTX 285 so its fairly old. Anyway I ended up buying an Asus Radeon R7 260X DirectCU II OC.

I made sure to uninstall all of the NVIDIA drivers and using a program that scans for left of registry edits and files. So I fitted my new card and booted windows with no problem. I installed the latest driver Catalyst Software Suite Omega (14.12) and was able to play any game without any issues. However when I went on my desktop next time instead of the login screen for windows it just showed a black screen. At first I thought it was a hardware problem but I did some research and found out a lot of people have been having issues with AMD's series of cards. So I couldn't log in to windows, I managed to get it to work by booting it in safe made. I did the same method as before, completely uninstalled the driver and using the wiping program. I was able to boot in to windows normally now with out any issues.

How ever I still needed a driver to be able to play games, I tried these fixes:

Installing the beta driver instead - Catalyst Software Suite 14.11.2 Beta
Installing driver AMD CCC 13.12 which was a popular suggestion on other forums
Installed a driver from ASUS website which is specifically for this card, and a separate BIOS update which is supposed to fix the black screen issue for this card, however the BIOS update stated it didn't need to update.

Changed from DVI converter with AVI to HDMI

Changed PCI slots, double checked all cables and tried a different power cable.

All of these solutions didn't work for me. I would like to not than when ever I tried to installed any of the other driver versions it would install CCC and everything else fine. Only when it reached the AMD display driver and tried to install it did it not work. I would flicker once black then back, flicker a final time than stay permanently black. When this happened I rebooted and I got a black screen instead of the login screen and I had to repeat what I did before to be able to log on. So I know the issue is something to do with the display driver itself, not the hardware or other aspects of the driver. So now I am stuck with the default microsoft display basic adapter which isn't viable as I cant play any games.

If anyone has any suggestions on rectifying this problem I would be very welcome to try it out, thanks.

Solution

That could be the case, I tested it on my other build and it has the same issue, although before I had installed any drivers, it had automatically installed its own version with CCC. I am guessing through windows update it scanned for hardware changes. I was able to play games than and there were no issues when I rebooted. Maybe it just doesn't like the updated drivers? So at least for now until AMD releases a new driver ill have to try and revert it back to when it was working. Even than it does have a few instances of black screens but it was a rare occurrence.

Sorry forgot to mention that, when I first had the driver issue I did update it to the latest BIOS version that was released for my motherboard, unfortunately also no luck.
