Is there any notable difference between the two motherboards other than the 990 being able to take SLI?

There's currently a $5 difference between the two, 990 being $120 and 970 being $115.

Features of the 990 vs. 970:
-- supports Dolby Home Theater
-- supports 2-way SLI/CrossFire at full x16 speed
-- double the x4 and x16 PCIe slots (at the expense of a x1 slot & a standard PCI slot)
-- 2 eSATA ports on the back panel
-- iEEE 1394a port

What that means is that, if you decide to have 2 nVidia (SLI) or AMD (CrossFire) graphics cards in place of a single card, the cards in a 970 board will be limited to PCIe x4 speeds, when the 990 board allows for the full x16 rate. In other words, the benefit of a 2nd card working in tandem gets offset by the speed limit imposed on the cards.

Even if you don't use dual grpahics cards, however, having more of...

SLI and Crossfire will work on the 990FXA-UD3, Only Crosfire on the 970 UD3P. But the other problem with the 970 UD3P is the 2nd Slot only run at x4 speed not x16, so it has only a quarter of the bandwidth for the card to communicate with the motherboard and potentially limiting performance. This is limiting only if you are running a 2nd card in the system. One Card will be the same.

Even if you don't use dual grpahics cards, however, having more of the faster PCIe slots means that, if you add additional expansion cards, they will be able to run faster on the 990 board than on the 970 board.

So, if it's only $5 more, then definitely go for it.
