Upgrade 4670k to 4790k?

First time poster here, just looking for a bit of upgrade advice, although I know this is an age old question.

Currently have the 4670k, I'm running SLI 980's and I'm considering upgrading to the 4790k, but would it be a worthwhile upgrade? Are my 980's held back by the 4670k at all? I also plan to Tri-sli eventually.

Thanks!

I just remembered something. You won't be able to triple SLI without upgrading to an X79/99 chip like the 4820K or 5820K. There isn't enough PCI E lanes on the i5s and i7s up to the 4790k. You only have 16 on those, but get 40 on the 4820k and 28 on the 5820K.

To be honest though I wouldn't bother with Tri-SLI. There's not many games out there that support it properly. So you're paying a massive amount of money for something that will only give you another 8FPS frames at 4K in the games that do support it properly.

As far as upgrade advice I honestly recommend continuing to enjoy your epic setup and either upgrade to a 6820K at the end of next year to go for tri SLI, or just sit out the wait for Nvidia's 2016 cards which will...

I can't think of any situation where it would make any difference for gaming.

If you decide to get into rendering two videos at once and things like that you will benefit from the i7, but really they end up being fairly similar in performance even with the hyper threading (and extra cache) for anything else.

That i5 is definitely not holding back your GPUs in SLI.

If you still feel like you want to try out a more powerful CPU with your current setup hold out and see what happens with Broadwell K.

Thanks for the answers guys, I figured the answer would probably be not worth it. I just wanted to make sure my system had absolutely zero bottlenecks in terms of performance, u wasn't too sure just how much CPU power SLI and TRI-SLI 980's uses.

My original plan was to go for the 4930k but was bummed out when I realised it was a socket 2011 chip which would mean I need shell put for another Mobo and what not. Oh the hassle.

Also if it makes any difference to my question, I game on a 4K monitor.

PS
In case you're curious I recommend waiting for the 6820K or 6930k for the 2400MHZ DDR4, mass of PC lanes and 6 core setup which will give you a beast of a rig if that i5 ever hits a limit.
Skylake K should also do everything you need, although you seem like a person who would appreciate the extra grunt.

Thanks Justin, very helpful and thought out answers you've out across there.

I had a feeling I'd be gimped with Tri/Quad SLI with the i5/i7's. I wish I had just skipped Haswell all together and kept with a high end x79 or gone with a x99 chip. I feel letdown with Haswell by the lack of high-end processors for those wanting Tri/Quad (Haswell-E being an exception to this due to needing DDR4 and x99 boards)

I'll probably stick with what I have though I really wanted to jump to x99 and get the 5930k, but the prices of DDR4 are really holding me back from jumping ship as I just can't justify the price of it.

Don't worry about it mate. You have an epic gaming rig. Honestly I'm a bit jealous haha.
You'll do great with the system you have for a long time yet.

And as far as CPU performance in games that i5 is great. Its just the current range of GPUs aren't ready for 4K gaming yet. When Pascal comes out you'll be doing massively better with 2 flagship GPUs compared to what you're getting now.

Well it seems I just couldn't shake the upgrade bug today, so I've got with the 5930k and an x99 board. That should scratch my itch for the next few years, time to find somewhere to sell my Mobo, RAM & CPU!

Hahaha good luck. They're all still great parts you're selling so I bet you will make someone very happy.
