Removing thermal paste without water

So I had to remove the cooler to make sure the CPU was okay after some POST issues, and I used a lint free cloth to rub off the remaining thermal paste. But there is still a very thin layer. Everyone says use 99% isopropyl alcohol, but I don't have any and I can't run out and get some. Alternative?

You can use nail polish remover, but you need to be very careful with it. Benzyl can also be used. You can also use a very strong alcohol, like vodka or rum, but that is not recommended to use. Alternatively you can do it with only a microfibre cloth, coffee filter and paper, but it will take ages.

I seemed to have removed most of it with just a cloth, would it be okay if I added some more and reinstalled the cooler?

As long as you remove all the previous thermal paste without leaving anything behind you'll be fine.

You can go to a drugstore and buy some it is not have to be 99% as it too expensive 90% will do. For an alternative you can use a hairdresser to worm it a little bit and it comes of much easier.

You actually don't need anything but a lint free towel. Run the computer for a bit. After the cpu warms the tim it will get soft and viscous and come off the cpu and heatsink very easily.
