4.00 ram installed but only 2.71 is useable please help!!

I have windows 8.1 64bit but it wont read all my memory,i saw the other threads but none of them work for me i dont know why.PLEASE HELP!!

so if i added another 4gig of ram to my computer would it run 6 gigs?

If you add another 4gb stick (Total 8gb), You can't say you will have 6gb free all the time. Sometimes 5gb and sometimes 7gb. But adding another stick will help alot.

Please could you post the steps you've taken to try and resolve it so far?

Funnily enough I literally just encountered this problem and resolved it for myself 10 minutes ago.

Right clicking 'Computer' and going properties showed 10GB Installed (4GB Usable).

If this is the same for you. I took my RAM out yesterday to check it's model for a new MOBO im buying. I put it back in incorrectly. you have to make sure the clips click the RAM in place and are parallel with the sides of the ram.
