Hi looking to replace my Q8200 CPU with a Q9550 or Q9650, running a X38 chipset, is it as simple as swapping them and turning the PC back on as I have no clue in this area

If not download the file and copy it to a DOS-bootable USB flash drive, then boot the system to the USB flash drive and run the program.
Update the bios first but otherwise, yes. Unplug the powercord. open the pc & iinstall the new cpu and new thermal paste. If you are re-using the cpu cooler then make sure you clean the old thermal paste off.
