Hi ive been saving up my money to build my first computer that will be ready to play far cry 4 gta 5 dragon age etc
i will be using a 720p 50 inch tv as my gaming monitor so 1080p is not an option
i am curently using a intel core 2 quad q6000 at stock clocks paired with a 750ti sc and was wondering which cpu should i upgrage to the fx6300 or 8350 would the 8350 be overkill for 720p gaming ?

8350 has better price/performance ratio and its slightly faster or slightly slower than the latest i5s. Also its cheaper.

Go with 8350. One of my friend had the exact same confusion as you but he was going for i7. After showing him all the benchmarks and youtube video comparisons he concluded that 8350 is much better.
I'm not an AMD fan, but just saying the reality. I have a i7 4930k OC to 4.5GHz. When I saw video comparison between 8350 and 4930k I was shocked at 5-8 fps difference only and 8350 costs less than half the price of 4930k.

Lol, bullshit benchmarks then. An I5 4460 does MUCH better than an oc'ed fx 8350 in pretty much every game. Look through benchmarks (google I5 4690k review or fx 8350 review) yourself. Especially for low resolution gaming, going with amd would be a horrible choice. You see people with fx cpu's complaining about low fps and stutters everyday here.

Well i googled and these made sense. My point is it does NOT make MUCH difference. i5 xxxx will give you better performance I agree, but merely 5-7 fps is not really a big hit. Its useless to point out but I have hands on experience on 8350 and i7 4930k. Me and my friend compared our systems being mobo ram and cpu were compared with Nvidia gtx 780 ti and with each and every game only good performance I got from 4930k was in metro LL, which was around 12fps - 15fps more. All of the other games we tested (crysis 3, AC3, Batman, CS) 8350 was only 5-8 fps behind.

Posting a nonsense forum topic, a 3dmark link (that is not solely a gpu score test and usually done at high resolutions) and a cpu boss link (really, I mean, really?) does barely mean anything.
With your 780ti's, I guess you are playing at resolutions of 1080p or 1440p, not 720p, where cpu performance matters like 4 times as much as on 1080p.
Plus, even for 1080p differences are very well noticeable. See the two links in my signature or just google for benchmarks. I mean, real benchmarks of trusted sites, not some cpuboss bullshit.

lol looking at the 2 links in ur signatures. Both shows either the i5s gives same fps or slightly higher :S anyway I don't want to continue this argument. Good luck OP with ur cpu hunt.

I would say go with intel as well. I know you wan't AMD and that is fine but we are just trying to help you get the best experience you can. When gaming at low resolutions far more load is put on the CPU than on the GPU and the higher IPC of the intel CPU's will be beneficial. If this were for 1080P I would say go for an 8350 and call it a day because at that resolution yes it is only a handful of fps difference between intel and AMD (although the AMD might have more low dips)

For example. My fiance's little brother plays day-z on a 720p monitor with a dual core AMD 6400k and a 550Ti. The CPU usage is 90-100% while GPU usage is around 30% he gets 25-30 FPS.

I borrowed him my back up Dell 1680x1050 monitor and while CPU usage was a bit lower at 70-100% (day-z very cpu bound) GPU usage was up to 70-80% and FPS was in the 40-50 range.

126 vs 94 fps.
96 fps vs 70 fps.
160 vs 136 fps.
28 vs 12 fps.
Two less cpu dependant games.
62 vs 51 fps.
86 vs 64 fps.

Do I even need to continue?
