i recently bought a secondary gpu for christmas hoping to run it in sli but it wouldn't work and i found out after a while that my motherboards pci-e chips didn't support it.

I wanted to know if it would be possible for me to upgrade the motherboard without much of a problem or causing any damage to my system

my current build running windows 8.1 64 bit:

asus z87k motherboard
intel i7 4770k (watercooled with corsair h80i
8 gb kingston hyperx beast (2x 4)
1x palit geforce 680 gpu
1x kfa2 geforce 680 gpu
corsair cm750w psu
seagate 1tb drive (with os)
seagate 2tb drive
samsung optical drive

wanting to know if upgrading to a maximus vii hero would create a solution and if it were possible and whether i would need to reinstall windows

any response would be greatly appreciated. thanks :)

The MSI GD65 has all the features of a Hero at a much lower price.

You don't **need** the Z97 version .... Z87 will do fine with 4770k. Choices:

Asus Z87 Maxumus VI Hero = $140

Asus Z97 Maximus VII Hero = $180

MSI Z87 GD65 = $146

MSI Z97 GD65 = $160

The Z87 Hero is the cheapest solution after the $30 rebate. However, the Z87 / Z97 hero's are affected by the BIOS clock freeze bug

"I have 3 boards with this issue in my shop and EVERY client system I built has this problem. I have tried EVERY fix in this thread, nothing works for more then a few days. Flashed BIOS, reset to factory, replaced batteries. NOTHING. "

1st post here shows it affecting Z97 Hero as well ... also look at newegg reviews where it's posted by users also.

The reviews for the GD65 have been outstanding ....

2. As for the switch, you will have to reinstall windows

3. The PSU, while 750 is big enough, the CSM series not very strong .... I wouldn't overclock on this system.

Here is Guru3D's power supply recommendation:

GeForce GTX 680 - On your average system the card requires you to have a 550 Watt power supply unit.
GeForce GTX 680 SLI - On your average system the cards require you to have a 750 Watt power supply unit as minimum.

If you are going to overclock the GPU or processor, then we do recommend you purchase something with some more stamina.
