Corsair spec3 case

This is my first attempt at overclocking. I looked for tutorials and walk throughs for my specific hardware and was unable to find it. I read everything I could find over the past few months and started ocing this morning.

I started by just changeing the multiplier from 32 to 33. Ran prime95 for 30 mins without any problems. Rebooted upped the multiplier to 34 and ran prime95 again. I repeated this process to 40 one multiplier at a time.

I didn't change the voltage. I let the bios do that. At 4.0 CPU-z shows the voltage at 1.288v. I looked at several charts showing the g3258 at 4.0 with between 1.050 and 1.072 volts. When I manually set the CPU volts to 1.050 the computer didn't boot and I had to reset the CMOS to get It running again.

My temps running prime95 at 4.0 with 1.288 volts topped out at 85c. But mostly stayed in the low 80's.

I would like the comp to run cooler. And maybe get little more OC. I know I can get a better CPU cooler and that will help, but I think if I can lower the voltage that will lower the temps. I'm just not sure how to safely do that.

I will also be upgrading to an after market cooler. Unfortunately the Cooler master 212 evo doesn't fit. So any recommendations that will fit the corsair spec 3 case would also be appreciated.

Some reading to get you started and get a better understanding:
http://www.overclockers.com/3step-guide-to-overclock-intel-haswell
http://www.overclock.net/t/1411077/haswell-overclocking-guide-with-statistics/0_40

If you want the CPU to run cooler you will need to manually adjust the voltage and try to get it down to the lowest it can go at 4.0 . Those temps are within spec so there is nothing wrong with that, but cooler is always better.

I started this morning by lowering the CPU volts to 1.25 and ran prime 95 for 20 mins. Then lowered to 1.225 ran prime95 again. At 4.0 ghz and 1.175v the temps stayed below 75c. So I started raising the multiplier again. I am currently at 4.2 with 1.2 v. Been running prime 95 for about 5 mins max temp is 80c. I am going to continue tweaking these 2 settings to get as high as I can and stay under 85c.

One more question should I adjust the CPU ring ratio, currently set on auto.

I would leave the ring ratio alone and I have found letting it auto isn't a bad option. If you want to fiddle with it leave it until you have sorted out all of your other settings and then work on the ring ratio. It sounds like you are definitely off to the right start :) - I have been overclocking for almost a decade and I still find it hard to teach people but I try. I have even gotten into extreme OCing with LN2 and have worked with MSI on various things (including trips to CES and Taipei to OC and give feedback to engineers). It has been a fun ride that all started just like this, using forums to learn and get advice/help. I have mainly been on XtremeSystems.org and that is a place where the OC nuts live lol and it is a global site with many sponsored OCers and industry people on it.
