My current hard drive is a Seagate 500GB (ST9500325AS). It came with my y560 laptop a few years ago. Recently, it's been causing the computer to freeze up for half a second and then resume. There have been instances in the past where I had to run a check disk to repair the bad sectors.

I was wondering what would be a good hard drive to replace it with.

A few that I have looked at are:

Is HGST a good company? I looked at the reviews and there seems to be a lot of drive failures.

Both of those are good drives. All drive makers have failures and they usually fail within the first 30days if they are going to fail early. If they make it past that they usually last a few years. Keep in mind that these are in laptops and how they are handled plays a big roll. Running drives don't like to be moved or bounced. Give the drive a minute to spin down before packing up and you should be good.

Alternately, if you dont need that much space, you could get a 120-128Gb SSD for about the same price and not worry about movement based damage and have much faster boot times.
