my mom wants a computer for school and I feel that building a computer would be more effective and cost less than buying a computer that's already built? I would like to know what are the best parts(cheap too) to build a computer that's fast and reliable. She only does her homework and maybe watch Youtube videos. She has a Dell laptop at the moment that she bought off QVC and it was cheap, therefore it's slow and unresponsive ! haha. So enough rambling from me, tell me what do you prefer? cheap, reliable, and not a ton of HDD space.

Honestly there is no SPECIFIC sole model. As your needs are 'basic' 90% consumer needs (no games, video editing, homework isn't crunching 1000x1000 row/column spreadsheet, etc.) there is ALOT out there to pick from based on your personal choice, running from $199 to $300 for Laptops, All-in-Ones, and Desktops. The Laptops sell the most, and any of them will meet those needs, BUT NO COMPUTER WILL SPEED UP YOUR INTERNET.

If your issue is things are 'slow', and those 'things' are all Internet based, that can be any number of other things, like for example your Mom/Dad was cheap and didnt' get a Internet fast enough for a entire family of computers. Or can be Mom/Dad never 'got the new router' they offered and your old one sucks. Or there...

Or there is TOO MANY devices connected, or your using the slowest 'wireless' signal (i.e. 802.11b or 802.11g instead of N or AC). Etc. Etc. Etc.

You can check on Amazon, Walmart, Best buy, Staples, etc. there is plenty to be had. Check the features, feel the systems. find one that meets your feel. Just price shop and get the best deal for the hardware and features one has over another, most is basic (i.e. one computer had 2GB of RAM another has 8GB, well 8 > 2 so... ).

Can you give us your budget?

For now you can grab an SSD and install it in your laptop. It will most definitely do the trick and make the laptop way more faster. Trust me, difference between hard drive disk and SSD is heaven and earth apart. It'll do the trick. You can always remove the ssd and put it in the new computer any time. It's totally worth it for extremely fast experience!

Here's a link to one:

Note: It will make your laptop a lot faster but will not make your internet faster.

Considering all you want is basic usage it makes things easier. Demanding tasks require higher end parts which cost more. Unfortunately, you're probably going to get the best 'deal' buying a premade pc from a retailer rather than building one. They use generic parts and buy in bulk which allows them to turn a profit even at low prices. The only way you're going to get close to the same price is by buying cheap parts and you'll neither get more performance or better parts for the same price. It's not like building it yourself you can put together the same $400 pc at walmart for $250. It's not just pc's, retailers and suppliers have caught on to diy'ers and in almost any project unless you're willing to super cheap out (hardly worth the time) it's going to cost you the same or more.

Just as an off the wall example, say you wanted a cheap quilt like they have at walmart or kmart for $40. Go try and buy your fabric, your filling, your thread and needles or whatever's needed and it'll end up costing you $50-60 in materials alone plus your time and the end result will be the same.
