I would choose Windows 7, but windows 8+ is more in sync with games now. They are creating the games to run smoother on newer windows.

Well I have Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit and I am satisfied. And I have somewhere read it gives you 20% more performance because its very light compared to Windows 7: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/answers/id-2091185/windows-gaming-performance.html

There's an already answered thread to this topic and the guy that got the solution is right.
"go for windows 8.1 x64 as it is directx 11.1 capable hence enhancing and smoothening ur gaming performance squeezing the best out of ur graphics card.... also it will give u xtra 5-10 boost in fps in games like bf4..... hope this helps" - adnan12

"Windows 8.1 64-Bit. Up to 20% better performance (or so i've read)." - JacobMcIntosh

Windows 8(or 8.1) takes less RAM memory to work, but it's a very new kind of style which many don't like.
Windows 7 is the "classic" windows version in it's last version(maybe windows 10 will be more like windows 7).
-----
For gaming i choose both, why? because all the games i have work fine in windows 7. but windows 8 don't support all of them(for example: Driver San Fransisco) .

FROM MICROSOFT:

Win 7 support ends in jan 2015. DX12 is supported only by win 8.1 and win 10

so it is wiser to get win 8.1 (normal, almost no difference against pro) 64bit(supports more than 4gb of ram)

anyway about the performance difference - overall there is very little 2-3 FPS at max (except some games like BF4 which has a large boost)

UI- better than win 7 .more user friendly. you can make it look and feel like win7(classic) using some options+ some extensions

COMPATIBILITY- few old games are not compatible/have issues with win 8.1. This can mostly be rectifies by running in compatibility mode

Hope this helps!

Windows 10 is looking a lot better than 8. It has the Windows Button, and the lower tab where your programs are located. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=84NI5fjTfpQ

Cool thing is that the start menu has basically all the apps you want on there. Looks a bit odd to me, but of course it'll take time to get used to.

I agree that windows 10 looks better, but don't use it for gaming...yet. Because it doesn't have any good or official drivers yet since it's beta/preview.
Windows xp/7/8 are the best for gaming. Windows xp can run the games optimally but windows 7 can run almost every game out there. Windows 8/8.1 is the newest one and takes less resources than windows 7/vista and has the latest drivers on the market.

If you really want to use windows 10, wait for the official one in 2015.

I definitely will wait for windows 10.

I probably won't even start my build until February 2015.

Use XP for gaming if you don't care about how it looks, the 'pretty' looks of the new OS's use up a lot of key processing power and apps waste your internet, ruining download speeds. If you are ACTUALLY good at computers, use Linux but that's difficult if you've never used it
