IDE hard drive problems.

So,yesterday I got my new IDE hard drive. It wasn't expensive and it has 50 more GBs than my old hard drive (I bought it because my old one died). However,I didn't realise that my old HDD was ATA/SATA. I wanted to know if it's ok to plug in a IDE hard drive into the computer that had an ATA/SATA hard drive (There is one free slot on the motherboard where I can plug in the IDE I think). And if it's ok,should I use the standard 40-pin IDE cable or something else?

Solution
Odd. Perhaps I am mistaken, but the site that I looked at said there were no SATA connectors on the m/b. Could be this is an updated version of the m/b.

Anyway, if the m/b has a 40-pin connector then you can use it. But if it has SATA connectors too I would still swap the drive if possible.
You don't say what make and model your motherboard is. But if it has an IDE connector (many don't - make sure it's not a floppy disk connector) then you can just connect the drive to it using a standard IDE cable. If you bought the drive from a retailer I would be inclined to see if you can get it swapped for a SATA drive. Nowadays they are cheaper, bigger, and faster than ATA drives.

OK. That has a couple of IDE controllers. In fact, it doesn't have any SATA controllers so, unless it was plugged in to an add-on card, your old disk can't be a SATA one. You can easily tell - the connectors are completely different. If the disk had a 40-pin connector then it was an ATA one.

Well, the disk was pluged in with a red connector, not with the 40 pin one,and on the head of the connector is a writing that says "SATA". My old HDD was a Maxtor 6G160E0.
