Hi everyone,

I'm looking to do a new build for the new year and was hoping to get a little bit of advice. I've done the usually reading through of reviews and forums to get an idea and I've put together a build that I think is fairly solid.

Budget: £1100
CPU: i5 4690k
Motherboard: Asus Z97 Pro Gamer
RAM: 8GB (2x4GB) Corsair DDR3 Vengence Pro Series (2133), Non-ECC Unbuffered, CAS 11-11-11-27, XMP, 1.5V
GPU: Gigabyte]http://www.scan.co.uk/products/4gb-gigabyte-gtx-970-windforce-3-oc-7010mhz-gddr5-gpu-1114mhz-boost-1253mhz-1664-cores-3x-dp-1x-dvi-]Gigabyte GTX970 WindForce 3 OC 4GB
SSD: Crucial MX100 256GB SATA III
HDD: Seagate ST1000DM003 1TB SATA 3 Hard Drive 7200rpm 64MB Cache OEM
PSU: XFX 650W XXX Modular
CPU Cooler: Enermax]http://www.scan.co.uk/products/enermax-liqtech-240-all-in-one-cpu-cooler-with-shunt-channel-technology-and-double-length-radiator-1]Enermax Liqtech 240 All-in-one
Case: be quite! Silent Base 800
Optical Drive: Samsung DVD Writer
OS: Windows 8.1

Total = £1130

I'm also going to be picking up the ASUS VG248QE LED 24" monitor, which will bring the total bill to around £1350.

My main question is around the motherboard. I've gone back and forth between the Asus Z97 Pro Gamer and the ASRock Z97 EXTREME3. The ASRock is a good £15 more expensive but I'm not sure it's up for the job of running a stable overclock on the 4690k. Does anyone have any experience of overclocking on the EXTREME3?

I know in the future I'm going to be tempted to upgrade this by adding another 970 and run SLI, and add another 2x4GB of RAM.

Finally, I just thought I'd check to make sure that there's not any new major releases that are just around the corner. I don't want to spend over a grand on a new build to find that there's a load of new gear about to be released. Is now a good time to buy?

not any particular one , but anything from corsair/g.skill/kingston

i would say to go for the cheapest if on a budget , but a latency of 8/9 with freq 1866 is the sweet spot
As i said before anything more than 1333mhz wont make a difference while gaming , only if you do 3dwork/videoediting

PS- 750W would be good for an SLI , but a bit close for my preference , after all frying a 1000E rig is a disaster no one would even liket o dream of

The extreme3 is very similar to the extreme4, so you should be fine, and it can handle overclocking well. All your parts are great options, but for the ssd I would suggest a 250gb samsung 850 evo if you can find it or a 840 evo, they are one of the best ssd's you can use.

i dont know about the OC

but i am pretty sure that a 650W isnot enough for really high OC + sli maybe an 850W/1000W with sufficient (Amp)

and not that it makes any difference while gaming , but try to get a lower latency RAM (8 would be nice)

That's a nice build and to be honest, AMD is about to launch their R9 300 series that are game changing in every aspect (20nm process, possible more VRAM, higher bandwith, better power efficiency...) and if you go with an AMD you can go with a FreeSync monitor thats just like G-Sync but $100-$200 less:

Sometimes memory won't work together if they weren't tested every RAM stick when put together. It happened to me when i was putting another RAM stick into computer but when I added at my friend's computer it worked perfectly. Not to discourage you, you can't mess anything up.

Thanks everyone...

I looked at the Samsung 840 evo and was impressed. It's a bit more expensive though. Might spend another £2 and get a SanDisk Ultra II. It's has the same read speed, but has a significantly faster write speed.

I'm comfortable with the 650 watts for the build, but you might be right that it's a push for going SLI. I'm going to have a look and see how much more the 750 version is.

uthvag; is there any other RAM sticks you would recommend instead that are at a similar price point?
