It's worth upgrading from an Athlon II x4 640 to an Athlon x4 860K?

Solution

Yes the FX 6300 is faster than the 860K. I'm running the 860K and although I love it, I'm always tempted to get a FX 6300 or 8300+. As the new motherboard supports the Athlon II X4 640 it seems like a good idea.

I don't think it is worth it. If you are short on money there are some entry level CPUs that will be a major increase in performance and actually worth your money, like the 1150 Pentiums or the FX 4300 and 6300. I think you are bound to change motherboards, anyway, better than spend more money on a somewhat obsolete socket.

I would say it is better, but that it would be worth to get a 8320, or the 6300 if you could afford. Take note, though, that those processors have different TDPs, which means, one needs more energy than the other, and even though you get an AM3+ motherboard you may not be able to upgrade later into a FX 9570, for instance, because it needs better TDP from the motherboard.

Yes I know, but I don't want to get bigger CPU then the 6300 anyway, so it'll be fine.
It's a good mobo tho? If it can run the fx6300, good eough for me.

I would not recommend anything less than an FX 6300 for upgrading from a Athlon II X4 640 to an AMD CPU. The 860K should have more power than the FX 43XX series (Steamroller vs Piledriver) but not the 6XXX and 8XXX series.

It seems like a fine mobo. To see compatibility go to "support" on the manufaturer's site and click on CPU compatibility list, to see if it is compatible and if you will need any BIOS update to make it compatible.

The Athlon isn't classified as a APU. It does have the Steamroller cores which are from new APU but isn't one.

The FX-6300 is stronger then the x4 860K right?
Anyway thanks for the answers guys, I think I'll get the mobo, stay with the CPU now I have, and save up for a 6300 later
