Low FPS in minecraft on High end PC (max settings)

Hey guys, I've recently started playing minecraft with couple of friends. I ran the game on all max settings except only 12 chunks rendered, had a good FPS (120~150). But when my friend suggested me to run it on 32 chunks (since i have a beast pc) I get 40~60 on toughest scenarios and just trails around 70~90 when i do normal stuff. Here are my PC specs:

GPU: Gigabyte GTX 980 G1 gaming
CPU: Intel I7-4790K at 4.0GHZ
RAM: G.skill Ares 16GB 1600MHZ
Mobo: MSI z97 gaming 5
Power supply: Cooler master extreme 2 725w
OS: win 7 pro 64bit

This really bugs me because my friend with a r9 290 and 4770k can run 32 chunks with 120 fps stable.(other settings maxed) He does run the game in an SSD and he has corsair vengeance 16 gb 1866mhz ram. I do wonder if the OS helps since he runs on win 8.1.

Please help me on this, I was getting 90+ 100+ fps on ultra settings in games like BF4, but I can't run minecraft on max settings?

If you truly feel like 40-90 fps isn't satisfactory, try installing the latest 64-bit java. If that doesn't work, a perfomance boosting mod, such as optifine, is easy to install, and gives you advanced settings to optimize gameplay.

If you install this, you can check tutorials on youtube, or message me on what to do/how to use it. Most tutorials on youtube show how to lower your settings to almost middle or lowest, and run extraordinary fps levels.

**NOTE**
I have used optifine, and it's different on all computers. You may not even need to change any settings, but with most computers I have worked with you will.

Make sure Threaded Optimization is turned off in the Nvidia Control panel. It always brings down my FPS and causes bad texture flickering.

My monitor runs on 144HZ, the problem is that, while I can't get stable 120fps on ultra, my friend can get that with a worse gpu and a cpu :(

Hi, I tried to use optifine on minecraft, disabled most of the performance settings but still left the rendering distance to 32 chunks. However, I've noticed this very interesting issue, at first, under 32 chunks, the game would run at 150~160 fps, after a few minutes 120~140, then 100~110 and a little while after back to around 60~90. Don't get me wrong, I could see some improvements with the program on lower settings (boosted around 150~200 fps on 12 chunks). Thanks anyway :)

I'm glad you gave Optifine a try. If you haven't already change the setting "Advanced OpenGL" to "Fast". This would always boost my FPS. In 1.7. I haven't played minecraft lately, so I do not know if they still have that setting specifically, or if it will help now.

I think I have your answer!!! Are you playing Minecraft 1.8?

Because for some reason minecraft lags and doesn't work if you run Java 8 with anything below 1.8.... try uninstalling java 8 and installing Java7U21..... that worked for fixing my laggy modded minecraft with my new computer

Uh, go to NVIDIA's website and update the drivers for the GTX 980 (or whatever graphics card you have)
Also make sure to switch from integrated intel graphics to the gtx 980 (it'll show as nvidia high performance graphics processor in the nvidia control panel"
