i want to know the best gaming cpu for under a hundred pounds as im wanting a new build, i doubt ill be playing anything intensive, most likely free online games like blacklight retribution and planet side 2 , or tom clancy phantom! please help

AMD FX 6300 isn't so bad. Otherwise one of the better i3s will also do the trick.

Would probably pick the AMD CPU on a tight budget due to the 6 core seup and overclocking.

Sure, i3s are kinda equal to the FX-6300, but when you consider the upgrade path it has, it just gets better.

You mean buying a cheap intel cpu, and then upgrading to an intel i5 or i7 when you need more CPU power?

If you want a tiny spec more performance grab the intel i3-4160. It gives you an extra 200MHZ and will be the same price at many places.

If you want to upgrade get a pentium g3258 and oc it. Then later upgrade.

Even overclocked, the G3258 cannot really match up to the 4150 as it's a dual-core without Hyper-Threading. It will also perform poorly in multi-threaded applications. Even then, getting a Z97 board and an aftermarket cooler will not be worth it. Dollar for dollar, a cooler will cost ~25 pounds and a Z97 board would be ~20 pounds more than an H97 board. That's already half the CPU's price. I would expect a 50% performance increase from that, since I'm spending half the CPU's price on overclocking stuff, but you only get a 10% performance increase.

Modern games requiring 4 threads are starting to not work on Pentiums these days. I really can't advise buying a pentium anymore.

Stop making me cry. You can mod those games to be ran on 2 cores and 1-2 threads.

Mods? I doubt any exist for games like BF4, and even then, very few people will care to make them because they all have CPUs with more than 2 cores/2 threads.

As an example minimum requirements to play Assassin's Creed: Unity is an i5-2500k. So that is a game that requires 4 threads all hitting 3.2GHZ to run. I'm sure clever coding can improve that situation but that is one example of a game you can not run on a pentium.

The killer for this guy is Planetside 2 minimum is the i5-760. Thats a quad core CPU. In fact the store page for Planetside 2 on steam specifically states it runs better on a quad core CPU.
Other examples: Watch Dogs minimum: 4 threads. Dead Rising 3 minimum: 4 thread i3.

This is a thing that exists and if he wants to play Planetside 2 without issues the the i3-4130 is the minimum I would recommend.
