I've already asked this question but i guess I would like to be more clear on what I need. I have overclocked my CPU to 4.0 but I had an issue where it froze on me after a few minutes it booted. So I guess my question is can any one run me through this process or guide me a bit or perhaps someone has a tutorial or video on how to do it step by step.

Thanks in advance!

Here's a guide:

Basically you will want to Up the multiplier by half steps (18X, 18.5X, etc) until you reach a point of instability. This is why I generally recommend AMD overdrive, as you can test stanility with every clock change. Please be sure to monitor temps throughout, and make certain you have a decent aftermarket cooler.

Once you have reached the max stable frequency, then you can try bumping the voltage just a very small bit to acheive a stable over clock. But really, I would just see first what the best you can do without adding voltage. And try google, it works wonders.

Easy steps for overclocking with Overdrive:
Go to Clock Voltage, and then increase the multiplier. Hit apply.
Then you check temperatures, do stability test for a minute just to be sure, and then you go there and do it again.
It will either get to a point where your PC will freeze and you have to reboot, or it will overheat.
If it does not overheat, increase the voltage instead, and then run stability tests to be sure it will not reboot. Then increase the multiplier again, until it gets to the point closer to the Thermal Margin, (10 degrees from it would be the best, according to most overclockers).
The guide from buzznut is very good.

My specs are listed below. Not sure if this would give a better answer or idea of me OC or even attempting. For programs what do I use for showing the temps and what not I was told CPUID CPU-Z & HWM. Also what Voltage do I bump up if needed and what temps am I looking to be around at Idle and stress testing.
MOBO – ASRock 970 Pro 3
PROCESSOR – AMD FX 8320 3.50GHz
COOLER – Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo
MEMORY – 8GB DDR3 Ram
GPU – Sapphire Dual -X R9 270 X OC Edition
HDD – 250GB
CASE – Raidmax
O/S – Windows 8.1 64-Bit
PSU – Corsair GS700

People tend to get to 4.5 GHZ with this cooler, but the VRM in your mobo doesn't encourage me to say it will be definitely safe. Best bet to go one step at a time, as we said, and monitor the temperatures. I have mine on 4.5 (8320) with watercooler and it doesn't even break 50 degrees Celsius.

I have this motherboard and CPU. From what I can tell you, you can't overclock any higher than 4.0 Ghz. I can only get up to 3.8 Ghz because otherwise my VRM's would overheat because they have no heatsink. This is also a 4+1 power phase board and with the 970 chipset you shouldn't be overclocking an 8 core CPU.

Your cooler is decent, but overclocking does not only depend on the cooler. Motherboard is probably more important than the cooler in overclocking.

The guide buzznut is showing is a guy using a 990FX chipset motherboard, which overclocks way better than this.

Be careful, don't fry your VRM's.

Well thats good to know that that some one has my set up board+cpu. So how should I do this? Should I push it to 3.8GHz I or 4.0GHz hear people from overclockers.com they shared their stories of overclocking on same board + cpu at 4.5 and higher. I guess this is why I was so determined to push it. But talking to someone personally that has my set up and getting their advice is better than blowing my board and what not. I will go with what you tell me so is 4.0 pushing it?

It's best not not push it anywhere above 3.8 Ghz. If you can get some sort of cooling on the VRM's of the board (small fans or VRM heatsinks that come with VGA aftermarket coolers) then you should be able to overclock it to 4.0 Ghz. Wouldn't recommend higher than 4.0 Ghz.
I decided to put mine at stock 3.5 Ghz just because I don't need that overclock and I want the components to last as long as possible. Also don't want to damage anything.

To push an eight core to 4.5 GHz or more you need a good board like a Sabertooth 990FX.

reason for wanting to overclock is i'm a huge gamer and their are some games coming out that I want to be ready for GTA V and a few others. Now let me ask this because I'm OC to 3.8 right now and temps are showing between 109 - 111 what are recommended temps and how can i lower them if they get high?

110 degrees F? That's pretty cool.
110 degrees C? Readings are incorrect. The computer should automatically shut down.
Max safe temp is 61 C (142 F). Try to keep it under that or don't go above 70 C.
Modify the vcore voltage and put it around 1.32v. Some people get 4.0 Ghz and 1.26 volts stable. You can try playing around with voltages and it should lower your temps a bit.
I'm currently running at 3.5 Ghz at 1.25 volts completely stable. Temps never go above 50 C on my Deepcool Gammaxx 300 cooler.

After about an hour running prime95 both my core and socket temps are low 50's celcius. I have an 8320 running at 4.7 GHz with a Sabertooth 990Fx R2. I have a well ventilated corsair c70 case loaded with fans. A NH-D14 cpu cooler, I also placed a 80 mm yates loon fan over my cpu socket backplate.

Alright I reached 50 Celsius on all 8 cores overclocked @ 4.0GHz.
Board @ 32 Celsius
CPU CORE @ 1.336v

is this good, and is it recommended to push further if I can?

With this motherboard I wouldn't push it any further. You have the revision 2 board right?
I thought of something. You can overclock this as if it is an FX-6300 processor by turning off 2 cores (or even 4), and leaving 6 cores (or 4 if you deactivated 4) active. I haven't actually try this but you can if you want.

You got a good point their! I didn't even think about that one, but then again I also don't know much about Intel even though they are I'm guessing the same thing same concept of doing things but I fell I know AMD alot better then Intel. I do know that Intel is better than AMD though but I've always been with AMD. As far as switching off the cores how do I go about doing that and what is the benefit of it.

Honestly I love AMD. The price/performance ratio is insanely convenient. People say their CPU's suck but that's a lie.
I have still yet to try out Intel. My first Intel CPU will hopefully be an i7 or a Xeon. I will NOT be upgrading from an 8320 to an i5, no point, just losing 4 cores that I actually use. It will just perform better in single threaded tasks and games (ARMA and Dayz XD). In BF4, our 8 cores kick some i5 ass!

I have a question that I have asked on Overclockers.com but wasn't really answered but the H100 that Im gonna get does it need to be water cooled or can I just run it straight like a fan?

The H100 is a water cooler :/
You do have to stick fans on the radiator though, otherwise it doesn't work.

Okay so from what your saying is I can use it with straight fans with out the watercooling liquid correct? Also is it better then the Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo with out watercooling.

You can't use the H100 without the liquid, because it is a liquid cooler.
And yes it is way better than the 212 EVO WITH the liquid.
