Hi I have been doing some research on the Asus Radeon R9 290 graphics card, and I was wondering if the upgrade from my current XFX Double D 7850 is worth the price. I got my card a couple of years ago and the 290 seems like a good performance upgrade, but before I order it I wanted to get some opinions on whether the performance is worth the price.

Your looking at a truly massive performance increase from a 7850 to a r9 290 mate seriously.
Your current PSU will run one no doubt.
Depending on your cpu - if your running an amd 8 core with any kind of over clocks its going to be on the limits though .
With any of the Intel chips you should be absolutely safe.
That's the main benefit of the gtx 970 really - low temps & the ability to run it on a 500w PSU or even lower.
I wouldn't expect the r9 series to drop any more personally even on the release of the 300 series - they're at an all time low now to compete with the 970/980.
Expect the new amd cards to have a big price premium comparative to the nvidia 900's

IMO I think it would be even more worth it if you could save up the extra 50 or so for a gtx 970, that would be a HUGE improvement. The 290 will be a great upgrade, but also make sure you have the extra power to run it and good case cooling

Yeah i can see that. Price for performance wise the 290 is the better choice if you don't thinks its cooler temps and what not are worth the money. GTX 970 is still new so it might get some better performance as drivers roll out as well, but who knows

Thank you all for the responses. I also wanted to get help at understanding if my psu would even be able to handle the 290. I ask because I have read that the card can require as much as a 750 watt psu and also that it would be fine with a 550 watt one.

I understand there is a decent price difference between the 290 and the 670 at the moment which is keeping my attention more on a 290, and since the r9 300 series is coming out in February I might as well just wait and see what that brings to the table. With the 300 series coming out soon, do you think that the 290 and 290x will go on sale for any cheaper anytime soon?
