Below is a link to a very good YouTube video that gives step by step instructions on how to fix it and initialize the disk, you can skip section 2 of the video if the disk is blank and just go to section 3 of the video. The video shows this being done on a Windows 7 machine but the procedure is the same for Windows 2000, XP, 8/8.1 etc. You'll want to choose GUID partition table (GPT) if it isn't already selected by default, DO NOT choose "MBR".
