Hello, I was wondering if upgrading from the A6 to the A8 would be worth a shot?

Right now im running the A6 with a XFX AMD HD 6670 1GB DDR3 in dual graphics. I was thinking I could get the A8, and run that in dual graphics as well for a little bit of a preformance upgrade until I can get something better in the future.

My specs are;

CPU: AMD A6 5400k APU
Mobo: Asus A88XM-A
Ram: 8.0GB
GPU: XFX AMD HD 6670
PSU: 350 watts

I was also wondering, if I did in fact get the A8, would my PSU be enough to power everything? the HD 6670 is just a PCI GPU, so it doesnt suck up too much power, nor does it need to be connected to the PSU.

Solution
Your PSU would be fine going from an A6 5400K to an A8 6600K. What is your plans on future upgrades? Another upgrade to the current PC you have or a whole new build that will be based on Intel or AMD?

Upgrading to a Quad-Core APU will give you a good boost in your gaming performance. As a Dual-Core APU does not really cut it these days. I also think it's better to be running one single GPU then a single GPU w/ Dual Graphics with an IGP. The A8-6600K is ~$95 new in the US while the 750K (5800K without IGP) is like ~$75. Just getting the 750K and running the single 6670 until you can afford a new build sounds like a good idea. You can also get the 750K (save ~$20), sell the 6670, and try to get a better GPU. Although if you get a...

Although if you get a significantly better GPU you need to get a better PSU.

But if you want yes an upgrade to an A8 6600K should bring some boosts to your FPS (at least minimum) I think.

Thanks for the reply, I appriciate it.

I have a question, if i may ask, what is the 750k? Do you have a link for it?

Oh, okay, I see what you mean now.

Following that link, shows it's out of stock, would this be a good selection in place of it?

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819113348

That is listed at only $77.99.

Is dual graphics really not that viable where a set up using a cheaper CPU with my GPU would preform better than the A8 6600k?

I didn't actually check the link you provided but $77.99 sounds like the 760K. Yes the 760K is better than the 750K. It's the 6800K without the IGP and it is already clocked higher than the 750K and can overclock even higher.

Honestly I think Dual-Graphics is 50/50. In some games let's say a 6800K + 6670 (no dual graphics) will perform better than the 6800K + 6670 (with dual graphics). On the other hand some games (Skyrim for example) will perform almost double of just an APU or an APU + 6670 without Dual Graphics.

The choice is yours. Getting an A8 6600K may be the safest option because for games that work with Dual-Graphics you can have it enabled while for games that don't work well with dual graphics you can just use the discrete HD 6670.

Hey sly, sorry for the late response, I didnt get an email you replied for some reason.

Anyways, thanks for all the help.

It's a tough decision, I like the idea that you said about having dual graphics for certain games, while only running the GPU on others. So essentially, it comes down to whether or not I want to spend 20 USD more for that ability, apposed to just saving 20 USD while getting the 760k.

I'm starting to lean a little more towards to the 760k, only reason being that my current build is just a budget build. I put it together back in February, but I do have a little bit of an itch to try and increase the performance I have currently with out spending too much more on the build. It's just for daily use and some light gaming.

I will be placing my order either today or tomorrow once I decide what im going to go with. If anyone else has some opinions, feel free to post.

I understand. The computer I use the most gaming right now is a budget build too. In general everything cost approximately $60 most of the time and never above $80.

AMD Athlon X4 860K - $75
F2A88XM-D3H - $65
GSkill 8GB (2x4GB) 2400MHz - $65
Corsair H100i - $65
Radeon HD 7850 1GB - $67
Cooler Master Silent Pro M2 620W - $70
Cooler Master N200 w/5 fans - $50

Total of the build would be approximately $457. This doesn't include the APU I had to buy to update BIOS ~$40. Obviously I didn't buy everything at once but now I play most games at a lower resolution (1280x1024) on high/ultra settings. My build is very cheap because the GPU was bought used and the 860K was an OEM CPU I bought off of eBay.

Whichever decision you make I hope you will be happy about it.
