Hello All,

I apologize for the length but please bare with me!!!!!!

I've been battling this problem for a couple of days and doing tons of research and have done pretty much everything that I have seen suggested to solve the problem but I have yet to come across a solution that works for me. I will try to be as detailed as possible because I want to get this fixed and I'm very tired of the non-stop work I've put into it.

ANY HELP IS GREATLY APPRECIATED!!

Ok, so I have a system running (as I type this) on my HIS iPower R9 280X, with a
Gigabyte Ultra-durable 990FXA-UD3 motherboard.
AMD FX-9590 processor 4.7GHz + boost
16GB of AMD Radeon Gamer Series Ram
1000w Thermaltake Toughpower Gold 80PLUS PSU

So I bought an HIS iPower R9 290X graphics card, and deleted the existing catalyst drivers for the 280X, shut down the computer, unplugged it of course, and installed the 290X in the PCIeX16 SLOT ONE (where the 280x had been, and is currently working right now). On boot up, I got a BSOD, so I put the 280x back into place, logged in, and ran the driver sweep cleaner tool thing as my research on this forum told me to do. I Made sure to uninstall the display drivers in the device manager also, and shut down again to replace the 280x with the 290x again. On bootup this time, no BSOD, but the mouse and keyboard stopped working so I couldn't log in or move the mouse, so I just reformatted the drive and completely reinstalled windows 7 pro. I installed the drivers for networking, put the 280x in for testing, and it booted up fine. i tried the 290X and on bootup I only get a black screen, not even to the BIOS first. So again, according to my research here, I reinstalled the 280x, and went to the gigabyte website and updated the BIOS. My current version is "F2" on revision 4.0, So I'm running the latest version NOT including the F3i BETA version. Upon trying the 290x again, still just a black screen. I'm stumped and I've tried everything I've come across here on the boards. So somebody please tell me if I've missed something, or what you think will fix the problem.

Thanks in advance and I apologize for the length again.

Hi, Have you tested second PCIe slot (even if the 280X runs fine in the first one)?
Assuming that the card is not defective, it might be a BIOS compatibility issue that has to to be addressed by Gigabyte. I suggest contacting them. See what they say.

Thanks for the response, but yes I have tried the second PCIeX16 slot with both cards and also set the initial video output in the BIOS menu to account for the slot change. Same results...a working 280x and not a working 290x.

I have not tried clearing the cmos, but just now I tried connecting the card with separate 8pin power connectors, and still boots into black screen, but the fans on the card kicked in pretty good one time and ran for a bit, and then eased back off. Anyone have a clue about that? Is that a good sign? Is it possibly a needed driver sweep issue since I installed the 280x again for some use? Can driver issues cause that at all?

Well I did a couple of windows updates and it restarted fine and worked. I restarted on another windows update, and now I get the black screen again and clearing the cmos won't even work now.... Does that clue us in on anything else it could be?

I just put the 280x in slot one and the 290x in slot 3....both in PCIeX16 slots with a PCIeX4 slot between them. Booted the cpu with hdmi plugged into the 280x in slot 1 and it's fine, I'm at the desktop right now. Anything I can do to manually switch to the 290x? Or check somewhere to see if it's being recognized?

Card is now being returned through Amazon, and I will be purchasing the Sapphire R9 290x Vapor-X 8gb card instead. I guess we will see how that goes! You wouldn't think it's my motherboard though right since the 280x works fine....but could it be that there is some unknown bios issue preventing newer R9 cards from working for some reason? I mean is that a real thing, or not really so much?
