My problem is (fairly) simple:
I wanted to check my graphic card's memory size. I remembered it to
be 512 mb when I bought the computer. I ran the associated program,
ATI Catalyst, and it recognized my graphics card:

Graphics Chipset ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT
Memory Size 256 MB
Memory Type DDR4

Looking for a second opinion I ran dxdiag which told me that my memory size was
1012 mb!

Which is correct?

Tanks in advance

DXDiag never gives an accurate video memory size because it bundles in virtual memory that could be dedicated to graphics memory as well as the card's onboard memory. Try downloading a program called GPU-Z and run it, it should so all the specs for your graphics card, including memory size.
